March 1st, Mrs. Camnie Cole, wife of Mr. Charles Cole. The deceased was a daughter of the late Captain 3.3J. Conyers. The bullheadedness of our up-coun try Congressmnen lost to Ve State the Federal Judgeship. It as a measly ddg-in-the-manger-spirit and such men should be kept at home to plow oxen. Messrs. J. H. Legare has accepted an invitation to deliver the annual adi dress at the closing exercises of the Moses Levi Memorial Institute, and we feel complimented in securing so dis tinguished a gentleman for the occa sion. Mr, Legare is a fine speaker, and our people may look forward to an intellectual treat. The progressive town of Summerton held its municipal election yesterday and placed the town in the hands of a strong board. Bank President R. B. Smyth,' Intendant; State Senator C. M. Davis, T. S. Rogan, H. A. Tisdale, and S. M. Colciough, Wardens. We will suggest that Hon. C. M. Davis do not accept the honor, as it will vacate his commission as State Senator. The Woodmen had a hilarious time last Monday night initiating some new members, none of which returned home horseback. While the lodge was in ses sion some prying individuals attempted to get a peep into the room to learn the mysteries of the order, but had they been caught they would have received the full knowledge they were seeking' in a most impressive manner. We do not think they would advise others to try it when the Woodmen finished with them. The Vital-Tone Concert Company, composed of Col. H. Bowman, wife, daughter and son, gave a very pleasing entertainment last evening at the In stitute Hall. Col. Staake, one of the officials of the Charleston Chemical Co. which is marketing Vital-Tone, added much to the evening's pleasure with flashes of h'umor, the story of the Mich igan parson, and nis songs. This com pany is composed of good people, they are nlot the ordinary "show peonle," and their especial work is to advertise Vital-Tone, a medicine sold by all drug gists, and financed by a Charleston syn dicate. This company will give anoth er exhibition this evening, and none need hesitate about attending. Col. Stake stands high with the business men of Charleston, and it was our pleas ure to form his acquaintance at the Commercial Club. Complaint has been made to us of a matter which is rather delicate to handle, but in alluding to it here it is with the intention to warn the culurits that they are being watched and if the uilty ones are discovered they will be exposed. We know that mischievous children abide at every school, and no one objects to their indulging in inno cent mischief, but when they resort to the low-bred practice of writing nasty, filthy sentences, and slandering school mates, it then becomes a serious mat ter, and should be discovered in order that punishment may be inflicted. In the case we allude to, we are very, very sorry to say the scribbling of abscene and slanderous matter is not on the boys' side of the school, and if the per petrators of these ugly things are dis covered, and if it continues they will be, there will be a humiliating spec tale when the exposure is made. So whoever is guilty let them take warn ing and stop before their sin will find them out. We ask all parents to direct their children's attention to this article as it may se't-hem fnture humiliation. Read the Carnival ad. The Council imposed a fine of $15 on Ir. Henry L. Johnson of Turbeville for fast driving through our streets. Sev eral weeks ago Mr. Johnson was driv ing a quick moving horse and in turn ing into Brooks Street from Boyce he was going at a rapid speed, and ran over a colored man by the name of Singletary. Mr. Johnson continued on his journey to Salem and when he came to Manning last Saturday Policeman Clark arrested him with a warrant is sued by the Mayor. Mr. Johnson gave bond for his appearence, and on Mon day he was tried by Council and ined as stated above. Mr. Johnson says his running over the negro was purely ac cidental, and he seemed to regret it. but had he stopped when it happened his fine might have been less. There is too much of this thing of fast driving upon our streets. and especially around the corners: we do not think people should be permitted to speed their horses in town, and when they attempt it they should be arrested and punish ed. The streets of a town are not in tended to be race tracks. and if a young blood has a high stepper and wants to show him off let him go where his fast driving will not endanger people. This fast driving should be stopped and all should be treated alike. If it is bilious attack take Chamber lain's Stomach and Liver Tablets and a quick cure is certain. For sale by The R. B. Lorysa Drug Store. Isaac -%. Loryea Prop. Well Done, Gentlemen! The Town Council. at its meeting last Monday, did the proper thing in appropriating $1,000 towards the erec tion of a fire-proof building for the Hannah Levi Memorial Library. This action was taken up on the petition of citizens who appreciate the generous donation of the Levi heirs, and who recognized the vast benefits to be de rived, not only for today, but for all future time. A number of citizens at tended the meeting of Council in the interest of the appropriation, and it was gratifying to them when Council voted the money without a dissenting voice. Thus manifesting an apprecia tive public spirit, which will be aug mented by a similar spirit on the part of the citizens in raising by private subscription another $1,000, and with $2,000 for a building a suitable struc ture can be erected, which will be fire roof and an ornament to the town as well as an exhibition of a spirit worthy of emulation. This library when fully equipped with building, paraphernalia, and a Librarian, will do an inestimable amount of good, morally, intellectually and socially-it will be a resort where high and noble ideas are inculcated, and it will have a powerful influence in shaping lives. A'lready the work has begun for the raising of the additional $1,000, by pri vatesubscription, Maj. A. Levi gives 3100, Mr. S. L. Krasnoff $50, and be fore tlze week is ended we feel assured that the entire amount will be raised, and the contributions will be made willingly, each contributor will regard it a privilege to subscribe his endorse ment and his means to such a grand and worthy object. Since the above was written Mr. D. Levi, St Paul, has contributed $100. Pleasant and Harmless. Don't drug the stomach to cure a 3ough. Good humor will prevail and everybody is expected to have a royal good time. The occasion for all this will be the presence of the Barkout Carnival Company which will perform here ander the auspices and by an ar rangement made with the Moses Levi femorial Institute, which institu tion will get a per cent. of the re eipts. Mr. Murphy, the clever advance agent, is now here having the bills posted and making other necessary arrangements for the coming of the Carnival Company, which will give their first performance here next Monday night. They will give two performances daily the remainder of the week, at 2 p. m. and.'i p. m. The Barkout Carnival Company is one of the best institutions of the kind on the road and the attractions are all clean and of an exceptionally high order. Among the attractions toibe put on by the Barkout Carnival Company. are the following: The Streets of Cairo, where will be seen some of the people from the far East, dressed in their native cos tumes, giving one an opportunity of studying their customs, mode of liv ing, etc. The "Old Plantation Minstrels" will give your money's worth in com i songs, dancing, up-to-date gags, Then comes the Electrie Theatre, the greatest ever seen in this coun-! try, where you will see the great Train Robbery, which will almost make you hold your breath. If you are suffering from melan choly, go into the Laughing Parlor, laugh and grow fat. Don't fail to see the Flying Lady, who fies in the- air like a butterfly. "Esau," with his thousands of dif ferent reptiles, gives some wonderful performances with them. Get off the earth by taking a ride on the great Ferris Wheel, which will give you a fine view of the town and surroundingecountry. Then there is the "old reliable" Merry-Go-Round to please the chil dren and all who want a good ride. One of the most daring feats is the High Dive given daily by Prof. Lotto, who dives 100 feet into pool of water 3 feet 6 inches deep. The Barkout Carnival Company has with them a band of fine Italian musicians, each one of whom is an artist with his instrument. This' feature alone will be worth going miles to hear. Besides the attractions mentioned, there will be a number of free exhi bitions given on the outside to amuse and make the occasion an enjoyable one for all. Don't forget the date, next Mon day, March 13th, to 18th inclusive. Paint Your Buggy tor 75c. to $1.00 with Devoe's Gloss Carriage Paint. It weighs 3 to 8 ozs. more to the pint than others, wears longer and gives a gloss equal to new work. Sold Letter to J. A. Weinberg. Dear Sir: Some think we take a good deal of risk in inviting complaints of Devoe lead-and-zine, we authorize our agent to sell it under this guarantee: "If you have any fault to find with this paint, either now in putting it on, or hereafter in the wear, tell your deal er about it. -We authorize him to do what is right at our expense." The following story tells how little the risk is: .1. H. Asher & Co, hardware dealers, R1hinebeck. N. Y., have sold Devoe from '76 to now: have sold thousands of gallons and have had just one coni plaint in all this time. Threesides of a house were perfect; the fourth was as bad as the tbree were good. Explanation--It rained the night be fore the fourth side was painted; and the painters didn't wait for the wood to dry. What is done in such a case. What eyer the dealer who sold the paint con siders it fair to do. We leave it to hin. He may not exactly what we should do if we were there: but we are not there.
