Charlie Wilder, negro a living upon the plantation of Mr. W. W. Johnson in the Fork, created a sensation here last Monday by walking through Boyce street from Bell's shop to court house artesian well. shooting a gun at inter vals, only long enough to reload. On arriving at the well he was met by a citizen who ordered him to give up the gun. which he obeyed without any ob jections, and he also submitted to ar rest in the same unobjecting manner. Policeman Clark put him in the guard house. and in response to ouar questions he told where he lived and that he meant no harm by shooting in the streets, that he did not intend to hurt anyone, as he fired up into the air. and what he did was for fun. He also said he was "worried in here," indicating with his hand that something in his breast and stomach was worrying him. The negro is evidently demented. Those who know him say he is a good, sober and harmless fellow. He certain lv was not under the influence of liquor and talks rationally. An Old Time Remedy. . Letter to a Mnning Lawyer. There will be preaching at Fellow ship church next Sunday at 4 o'clock p. m. by Rev. Md. A. Connors. Public cordially invited. Dear Sir: What's the penalty for making or selling shor-measure paint in your state? And does it make any difference, if three-fourths of the paints are short measure? Is seven pints a full-gallon or a fool gallon? What's, the penalty for making or selling whitewash for paint? Is whitewash paint, if mixed with a little paint and labeled "Pure mixed paint" or something like that? But we don't intend to go into the business. We make Devoe lead and zinc full-measure and true. Yours truly, 24 F. W. DEVOE & Co. P. S.-Manning Hardware Company sells our paints. There Will be a New Presbyterian Edifice. At a congregational meeting in the Presbyterian church last Sunday, the report o$ the committee having in charge the matter of suggesting a means to procure the building of a new church was read and adopted after some good natured, and kind spirited discussion. The Presbyterian congre gation is in earnest in their desire to build and before another twelve month they will have in the beautiful grove owned by them a church building which will be an ornament to the toWn and in keeping with its progress, and it will also be a beacon light to guide the unwary to a better life. The edifice will breathe a renewed life into the membership, and they will become an active, energetic and positive force that will crowd out lethargy and create an enthusiastic congregational life. COMMITTEE REPOTT. Manning, S. C.. Nov. 20, 1904. Your committee, appointed to con sider the mode procedure, ways and means, etc., towards the building of a new church. in case you determine to build the church, and to make sugges tions to this meeting. respectfully re port: 1. We recommend the building of a brick church costing not more than eight thousand dollars. 2. We recommend the printing of a subscription card reading as follows: Manning. S. C., Dec.......1904. I Promise to 'ive, with Lord's help, ..........towards the building of a new Presbyterian: Church, '.......... thereof payable Dec. 15th -.A, and the balance at ......(monthl.% or quarter ly) during the next four years, and pre sent the same at the usual time and place of public worship. That twelve blue envelopes, suitably endorsed, be placed in said packages in which the contributions shall be made. 3. We recommend that an earnest effort be made to make the cash por tion of the subscription on Dec. 15th 1904. at least $1300.00. This money can be placed at compound interest. 4. We recommend the appointment of a committee consisting of five men and two ladies to select a plan for said church, said plan to be reported back to the church when finally selected, said committee to have the architect or contractor drawing the plans present at said meeting to answer all questions and fully explain plans. 5. The building committee is hereby directed to employ an architect, not only to furnish plans. but to supervise building. 6. We recommend that when the plan is decided upon the said building committee let the contract of building to the lowest resoonsible contractor. That if, when all bids are in, the low est responsible bid is above the cost recommended herein, said committee will report back to the church for in structions. 7. We recommend the appointment of a finance committeee of three, whose duty it will be to audit the treasur'er's books quarterly; see in person any his books may .show in arrears on building subscription, and any member who may not subscribe and urge the same upon him or her, and otherwise aid said treasurer in his duties, and see that all moneys are promptly invested. S. As a business proposition we re commend that the money paid in not be allowed to remain idle even at 4 per cent, longer than April Tst 1905, and that the building be commenced on that day; that when the money in hand is consumed in the use the trustees of church'property be directed to mort gage such property for balance neces sary to complete building. We are firmly convinced that with united effort this church can be easily builk. Respectfully submitted, (Signed). J. M. HOLLADAY. D. C. SHAW. W. SCOTT HARTIN. W. M. BROCK~INTON. W. C. DAVIs. A London paper quotes a shopgfrl as aying that the Englishwoman can generally be persuaded to take this or that, whether she wants it or not, and that she does not often see that she rets value for her money. The English are also courteous and considerate. It appears that Americans, on the other hand, give the greatest trouble of all. They are afraid of being cheated, they want to make sure before they buy that they could not get the same thing for less money elsewhere, and they are never courteous. As shoppers it is Frenchwomen, however, who command the greatest admfration, we are told. They always know exactly wh.at t~e7j want and will take nothing else. To her solicitous inquiry he ex plained that It was the woes of his fa vorite hero which caused his tears. "But," she said, "why not put an end to them?" "Oh, it is too sooni to do that," he sighed.
