Hilton of Davis Station has a brother living in Iillum county Texas, and in reply to a letter concerning the pest in that part, of Texas, the brother writes: "the weevils are now at work upon his crop, and on land that made lU bales to the acrea last year, will not this year make more than one bale to 20 acreas. The pest is all over the State of Texas and the condition has become alarming. In our opinion the weevil is indestruct able, and will soon spread their de structive work all over the entire cot ton belt. It is also our opinion that commercial fertilizers have something to do with creating this evil." In the hurried manner we had to get up the returns from the primary last week and the indistinct sounds on the telephone, there were several errors in our report which of course was correct ed by the otticial tabulation, and instead of two having received a majority for the legislature, there was only one, Hon. R. S. DesChamps, thus making it necessary for the election of two Rep resentatives in the second orimary, and Messrs D. L. Green, M. C. Galluchat. J. H. Lesessne and D. J. Bradham be ing the next highest, they will have to run over, and the people will vote for two of them. While we do not think it necessary, yet. through the accidental dropping out of one type in the E. C. Horton column, the paper read that he received 30 votes, when a glance at the column shows he received 430. This explanation is made merely to keep the record straight, and to prevent any misunderstanding. The guide for last week's primary is the official tabula tion in this issue. It Saved His Leg. P. A. Danforth of LaGrange, Ga.. suffered for six months with a frightful running sore on his leg: but writes that Buckien's Arnica Salve wholly cured it in five days. For Ulcers. The State Convention of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union convenes in Manning 29th inst. See notice in another column. This organization stands for prohibition, and pledges its influence to secure legislation against the dispensary. Under the auspices of the W. C. T. T. U. men are allowed in membership, this is known as The White Ribbon Order and its members subscribe to the following j pledge "I hereby solemly promise. God helping me, to abstain from all Distilled, Fermented and Malt Liquors, includ ing Wine, Beer and Cider; and to em ploy all proper means to discourage the use of, and traffic in, the same". Cap tain D. J. Bradham who is . a candidate for the legislature subscribed to this pledge-He is a White Ribboner, but takes the position that the liquor ques tion is settied in favor of the dispensary. It does strike us that a solemn pledge is far ahead of the vote of a majority, because it often happens that majori ties are reversed. A man who is un der an oath to fight - the sale of liquor, ought not to take off his white ribbon bow for a liquor-selling badge, because a majority have spoken in favor of liquor. Men and policies change but Principles are as fixed as the stars, and as immovable as the heavens. Fire. About 8 o'clock last Saturday morn ing the naval stores plant at this place took fire from a defective retort, and owing to the combustible nature of the product it was but a short time be fore the entire plant was in flames. Had there been the finest fire depart ment in the world present it would have been impossible to have saved the property. The only thing that could| be done was done-to save some of the barreled spirits and some empty bar rels, and to keep the tire from spread ing to the Standard Company's oil res ervoir which was in the near vicinity. Fortunately the wind was blowing the fierce flames and intense heat away from this tank. The flames and smoke shot high up in the air and could be seen for miles. There were hundreds of cords of wood on the yard and about 130 cords were destroyed. The plant was so nearly destroyed that it will, if the company decide to continue, have to tear down and rebuild. The prop erty was valued at s29,000; insurance, 10,000. Owing to the hazardous risk, insurance could not be secured in reg ular old line companies and it may be doubtful if the company will recover all of its insurance. The railroad track of the A. C. L. was on fire when the train from Char leston arrived, and after waiting for or ders, it backed~ to Wilson and went to Sumter over tbe W. & S. road. We do not know whether the turpentine plant will be rebuilt -or not, but we hope it will, as in our opinion the fumes from it has a wholesome effect upon the at mosphere. Some think its rebuilding doubtful as the financial returns have been disappointing to the ii-estors. ~eusthe The Kind You Have Always Bought of W. C. T. U. -The twenty first annual convention -of the South Carolina Womans Chris tian Temperence ~Union will conveine ~.in the Manning Methodist Church Sept. 29-Oct. 3, 1904. We expect the rare privilege and pleasure of having Mrs. Susana M. D. Fry of Ill., National ~Corresponding Secretary to be with us. Our own Mrs. Janie Herbert Haynes of Leesville, S. C.. State President, will aof course be here. Program of convention will appear rlater. t MRS. JTOSEPH SPROTT, 1 ~ Pres., Lo~cal Union. ~Youog Plants Every farmer knows that some plants grow better than wh~1ers. Soil may be the same m .d seed may seem the same b ut some plants are weak and thers strong. And that's the way with children. They are like young lants. Same food, same home, ame care but some grow big amtd strong while others stay s mall and weak. sScott's Emulsion offers an asy way out of the difficulty. Child weakness often means ' tarvation, not because of lack f food, but because the food loes not feed. sScott's Emulsion really feeds nid gives the child growing strength. Whatever the cause of weak ness and failure to grow Scott's Emulsion seems to find Sit and set the matter right. ' Send for free sample.
