Mrs. E.M.Fuller of CambridgeMass., is in Manning visiting her sister, Mrs. Thomas Nimmer. Mrs. H. D. Plowden has been called to Cheraw on account of the extreme illness of her father. Hon. J. H. Lesesne spent Monday at home, there being no session of the legislature that day. Mr. R. E. McFaddin of Sardinia was in town last Saturday very much de lighted at the 16 cent price of cotton. Rev. R. M. Marshal rector of the Episcopal church at Summerton will move into the new rectory with his bride in a few days. Mrs. Unruh will deliver a Temper ance address Thursday night at 8 o'clock in the Methodist church. Do not miss this opportunity of hearing her. The experimental station Bill of Hon. R. S. DesChamps has received a very complimertary notice and endors ment from Gen.'I.C.Butler, whose letter we publish elsewhere. Mr. P. B. Emanuel of Virginia has been spending a few days with his brother W. P. Emanuel. This gentle man is a fluent and interest talker, and well posted on current topics. Last Monday Harrison Tindal, a son of Henry Tindal, colored, while haul ing wood near Davis Station, was thrown from his wagon and instantly killed by the mules taking fright and running away. "That Boy" will -be the subject of Mrs. Unruh's lecture tonight instead of That Old Bachelor as announced last week. The council has decided to wait for legislation before considering the gran ting of franchises. There should be an election .to put this town under the general incorporation laws so that council can have more power, and thereby get our town in the line of progress. The town is likely to run up against the courts, if the council assumnes pow ers they are not delegated in the char ter. There is an effort to get a fran chise to the streets ot Manng and should council grant it. we are told a writ of injunction will be issued at once. Get the power and then go ahead. Married on last Wednesday evening by Dr. S. M. Smith, in Eau Claire, Columbia suburb, Mr. Charles Young blood. and hMiss Mary Barrett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Barrett, formerly of Clarendon. After the ceremony a large number of friends sat down to a feast. The young couple received a large number of useful and valuable presents. Mrs. J. H. McKnight of Man ning was among the wedding guests. Cotton keeps bounding upwards and the New York bt'ying speculators claim the staple will reach 25 cents by July. What a pity they did. not do their work. in September a'nd October when the famers were trying to pay debts. Don't let- the present big price keep you from planting plenty of food stuff. Plant your cotton crop and cultivate it as though you were looking for 6 cent prices. N-ow is the time to economise. We regret to learn that Mr. H. T. Avant is no longer in Summerton, where he has been the main factor in putting that town in close connection with the business world. He has gone to Sanfran to engage in the saw mill business. His son Mr. Ashley Avant will continue to conduct the business of the Avant Mercantile Company. Mr. Ashley Avant is a young man of rare business ability, full of progress and energy. When the council reduced our police force we protested against it'and it did no good. Now we bring the matter up again in order to call attention to the depredations that are being committed all over the country. Lake City, Tim mosville, Society Hill and Mulhius were recently visited by safe-crackers and on last Thursday night the store at Harvin's mill was entered through a back window and the store robbed of a quantity of goods and about $35 in cash. We need two night policemen on these streets and we should not wait until "the horse is stolen before we lock the stable." A Nice Performance. The Lula Tyler Gates Company, en tertained a large audience at the Insti tute last evening. Mrs. Gates' read ings are of high order; this lady recites with an ease and grace that captivates her hearers, and makes of them charm ed listeners. Her recital of "The Death Dish" by Mark Twain, was indeed a heart-chord toucher and moistened the eyes of man~y. Mrs. Helen Carter McConnell's con tralto's voice will class with many of the noted prima donna's nowstarring on the operatic stage, it is not only exquis itely sweet, but it is also full of range an power. Miss Marie Ludwig, the harpist, was indeed pleasing and so well was her performance that she was encored sev eral times. M'lr. H. Bennie Henton, with clarinet and saxapbone made very sweet music, and his rendition on saxaphone accom panied with piano of "Scenes that are Brightest" was superb. This opera althogh old, is one that will never die, like wine of old vintage, it gets sweeter and sweeter. The entire performance was excel ]ent: it was a dignified presentation of cuture, art and refinement, with enough wit and humor to keep the audience f-onm formal stiffness. Relief in One Minute. Haven't I been to every play, read every popular novel in the last six months, got into debt hope lessly and cut off my mustache, and all for your sake?-Bostonl Journal. Letter to F. N. Wilson. Dear Sir: Your business is, when a house burns down, to give the owner some money to build a new one. It is a good business. Queer that the world got on so long without it. *We paint the one that burnt down and the new one too. What is better, we paint the houses that don't burn down. You insure the houses that burn; we insure the houses that don't. You have the ashes and smoke; all the houses are ours. We paint lead-and-zince; Devoe. We sell the paint to painters; we don't paint. Lead-and-Oil is the old fashion paint. Devoe is zinc ground in with lead and linseed oil; the best paint in the world: and the cheapest, because it takes fewer gallons than mixed paints and wears twice as long as lead-and-oil. Nobody wants poor paint: there's lots of it, though, in the world. A. M. Griffn, PlainfieldN. J.,writes: "Mr. Aaron Higgins, of Plainfield, al ways used 15 gallons of mixed paint for' his house. Last spring he bought 15 frallons of Devoe and had 4 gallons left." Yours trnly, F. W. DEVOE & CO.,. 39 New York. Eleanor-I've refused Edgar five times. Dorothy-Well? Eleanor-Here's a note saying he lends me this lovely diamond ring to wear until I accept him. Slk Blod Feed pale girls on Scott's Emulsion. We do not need to give all the reasons why Scott's Emulsion restores the strength and flesh and color of good health to those who suffer from sick blood. The fact that it is the best preparation of Cod Liver Oil, rich in nutrition, full of healthy stimulation is a suggestion as to why it does what it does. Scott's Emulsion presents Cod Liver Oil at its best, fullest in strength, least in taste. Young women in their "teens " are permanently cured of the peculiar disease of the blood which shows itself in paleness, weakness and nervous ness, by regular treatment with Scott's Emulsion. It is a true blood food and is naturally adapted to the cure of the blood sickness from which so many young women suffer. We will be glad to send - a sample to any sufferer. - Be sure that this picture in the form of a label is onth wrapper of every bottle o! Emuulsion you buy. SCOT T & BOwNE, ChemIsts, 4o9 Pearl St., New York New Zion Dots. Editor The Manning Times: Auditor Dickson has been over here taking returns, 1 know of nothing else he took. and have heard of no com plaints of anything being missed from these parts. There has been another young dude from Turbeville lurking around in these "diggins." diked up within an inch of his life, and his "Pa's" coat. Look out girls he is a fisher. Mr. Dave Cole of Seloc after several weeks stay in Sumter has returned home. I see published in several papers something in regard to killing the boll weevil, two gentlemen have been to Tex as to investigate a plan to stop this pest: if it is something like our tobacco worm they will not be able to kill them soon. Plowing the soil and turning the worm up to the sun as has been suggested, is not killing these things worth a cent. I have never seen the boil weevil, and I doubt if many here have seen it, yet there are numbers in every community that can master the situation, they should go to Texas and make the gov ernment reward. Some smart writers are advising the farmers to plant to bacco again, and claim the weevil will be des:royed and the cotton crop will be larger than ever which will bring the price down. Cotton cuts no figure with tobacco, and the average in S. C. does not affect the cotton market in the least. But they want the Salem farmer to plant tobacco and bring it to their warehouses to give away for $1 or $2 for a large load, about enough to pay for dinner at Jim Richardson's restau rant while in town, and that depends on which house he sells at; the buyers sit up in the shade, drink their fine li quor, smoke cigars, and play checkers. The buyers and warehousemen simply get it all. Don't pay any attention to those advising you to plant tobacco, risk your chauces on cotton and grain. Be sure and not neglect your grain crop. Come ahead John Slab and give us more light on the guano question. B. Fewer gallons; wears longer; Devoe. A Cure for Eczema. My baby had ecbena so bad that its head was a solid mass of scabs and its hair all came out. I tried many reme dies but none seemed to do any perma nent good until I used DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve. The eczema is cured, the scabs are gone and the little one's scalp is perfectly clean and healthy and its hair is growing beautifully again. I cannot give too much praise to De Witt's Witch Hazel Salve.-Frank Far mer. Bluff City, Ky. In buying Witch Hazel Salve look out for counterfeits. DeWitt's is the original and the only one containing pure Witch Hazel. The name E. C. DeWitt & Co. is on every box. Sold by The R. B. Loayea Drug Store. Answered. I heard a good story the other day about a matrimonial agency. An elder ly man had three daughters who ruled him with a rod of iron. Weary of their tyranny, he advertised in a paper for a wife. Next day he received three re plies-one from each of the daughters. -Exchan.e. A Wonderful Saving. The - largest Methodist church in eorgia, calculated to use over one undred gallons of the usual kind of mixed paint in painting their church. They used only 32 gallons of the Longmnan & Martinez Paint mixed with 4 gallons of linseed oil. Actual cost of paint made was less than $1.20 per gal Saved over eighty ($80.00) dollars in paint, and got a big donation besides. EVERY~CHURCH will be given a liberal quantity whenever they paint. Many houses are well painted with four gallons of L. & M. and three gal lons of linseed oil mixed therewith. Wears and covers like gold. These Celebrated Paints are sold by The R. B.
