Gonzales, ended as we ex pected, in a verdict of "Not Guilty." We had no idea of any other result, even if the defense had not put up a single witness to attempt to rebut the evidence of the State. We were fully sat isfied it was "fixed," notwith standing twelve "good and law ful" men swore to render a ver dict according to the law and the evidence. The verdict clears Tillman so far as the law is con cerned, but it does not clear him with his fellowmen. James H. Tillmanis "not guilty'' according to twelve Lexington jurors, but the brand of Cain is upon him just the same, and put there by the stenographic reports of the testimony. A Lexington jury white washed his guilt, but he will go through life with scar let hands and a lashing con science. Not guilty of murder, after waiting for months to throw his victim off his guard, and then without giving him "no more chance than a mad dog," shot into the side of a passing un armed man, and made it "one of the G-d d-est tragedies that ever happened in South Caroli na." Not guilty of murder, when he greeted his victim with "Good morning Mr. Gonzales, I -got your message," at the same in stant fired the_ nderous shot, and on - and he admitted he wore falsely about getting a message from Mr. Gonzales. Oh! what is the use of attempt ing to prove the falsity of that verdict. The people throughout the State, and many throughout the Nation are as familiar with the evidence as the jury. Did James H. Tillman murder N. G. Gonzales, without immediate provocation, and without allow ing him any more chance than a mad dog? Yes. Did James H. Tillman make it one of the G-d d-est tragedies that ever hap pened in South Carolina? Yes. A Lexington jury however, says not. and their say is law. The public tribunal will not sustain their verdict, and notwithstand ing law and- justice has ruthless ly spat upon, it is not the first time in South Carolina, be it said to our shame. Tillman, luckily for his neck, was well connected, he was guarded by a powerful political influence, and having this influ ence at his back, a jury of parti -sans such as issued him an award of freedom was possible, but had he been some friendless creature, his neck would have been broken by the hangman's knot. Justice has been stricken aiiother blow, -her cheeks are mantled with the blush of mortification and shame, the proud name of South Caroli na is being used to taunt her in her humiliation, all because twelve men disregarded their oaths. and gave a certificate of character to alian who is clearly guilty of the horrible crime of murder. The press of the entire country is -condemning the verdict, but what-difference will it make to Tillman, and to his jury. Till man has gotten what he wants, and we suppose the jurors have gotten what they wanted; the curtain has been rung down, and the farce is over. But what of the results? Will -crime go unpunished in the fu .ture? It depends upon the nature of the crime, and who commkts it. Many a poor wretch is now languishing in prison for having much more excuse to commit crime. It is useless to dwell upon South Carolina's disgrace, but we feel we should go on record with our abhorrence of the dis gusting travesty on justice. The verdict may be pleasing to some few whose minds are poisoned :' with partisan passion, but the masses turn from the sad specta cle with horror for the future. This foul crime not being pun ishied, will nrotdeter newspaper editors from doing their duty, a legion of murderers armed with Luger magazines, will not stop an honest editor from exposing crime, or from warning the peo ple agtinst those who are more suited for the penitentiary than for public trust; the records of public men will continue to be grist for the editorial mill, and whenever exposure or criticism is essential for the public wel fare, editors who honor their calling will continue as if one of their number-- had not been slain while at his post of duty. The murdering of N. G. Gonzales, the lamented cham pion of clean methods, will not be any encouragement to a cow ardly lawless element, nor to the leprous few, who, to keep the search light of publicity from reaching their dark deeds, would redden their loathsome hands in the blood of their fellow man. a shield of protection to the peo ple in the past, they are at pres ent, and they will continue to be in the future. No faultless man has ever had cause to complain of the exposures by the newspapers, it is the guilty who cry out; whenever a man is entrusted with a public commisson, and defaults or violates his commis sion, an editor makes himself a party to the crime, if know ing it, he does not make the ex posure, and when a man offers for public place, and his life and character is known to the editor as being unworthy of trust, it is his duty to give his information to the public, otherwise, he aids and abets in foisting upon the people a man that may disgrace and bankrupt them. The president has called an extra session of Congress to con vene November 9th. Shall Manning continue to be without fire protection is a ques tion our town authorities should ponder over. We have too much valuable property here to risk without protection. The State Fair begins next Monday, and from the program published it will be the largest fair the association has ever held. The railroads will give cheap rates, and the whole coun try will be there to see the at traction. The matter of appointing special judges is becoming so common that it begins to look as if it will become necessary to increase the number of circuits in order to meet the demands of litigants. -We have heretofore been opposed to increasing the circuits, but, unless conditions change, in our opinion it will be cheaper to elect more regular judges. The registration in. Greater New York has been very heavy, and there is a strong probability of the Democrats making a suc cessful fight; the Democracy of New York is more united now than it has been for years, and a united Democracy means an over whelming Republican defeat. Should the Democrats of Greater New York win, it will mean much advantage in the coming presi dential ,lection, hence the whole country is watching the fight. How's This! Editor The Manning Times: As our town is on a boom it would be very pleasant to have you and the many readers of your worthy paper to give us a visit that you may see what a change has taken place with us. Y ou would not know our town judging from last you've seen it. I tell you the merchants have certainly put a move on this place. On last Saturday eight clerks stood behind the counters of one store and not one ate any idle bread. Still the merchants add to their already large business I am satisfied more space will be demanded. We have a fine business set of merehants and all are doing a nice trade. Sumter will be made to feel this towri this fall. In your issue of Sept. 30 Buster gave our county commissioners a raking. I think Buster is mistaken and a little unjust towards them especially as one hails from here and he having the full condence of all of us we know he will have things right or a row. Now Bus ter taking your position that of blowing our magistrate's good work as a claim for the chain gang if that is our hope then your foundation is on sand, old boy for a century continued as it now stands from our magistrate's office would not entitle uis twenty minutes' work of one convict, Iboth legs and has seen his 100th,irthday, and as a proof I refer to the records of theichaingang, I also was told a short while ago by one in position to know as yet the officer had not up to then paid in fifty dollars. Nowv, friend Buster, where 1s your claim there is plenty for the office to see after but it seems impossible to :get it down this very way. A warrant was denied an 'old colored woman, so she claims, because she could not raise three dollars, the amount she claimed he re quired as cost for issuing the warrant, and I havo every right to believe her as I saw her trying to borrow the money from one of our merchants, and was told it wvas a case for the circuit court go with it to the solicitor. The charge being a grave one that of assault with intent to kill, the act being committed upon her son at Felders post office last Saturday night, it seems any magistrate ought at once have seen af ter as the occasion gave great annoy ance to Mr. Felder's family. The boy was cut in the scalp with an ax, struck in the back and the. chancss are that he will die and no warrant. If the as sailant gets away who will be to blame? You see, Buster, you are in bad shape. Come again. ANON. Dieting Invites Disease. To cure Dyspepsia or indigestion it is no longer necessary to live on milk and toast. Editor The Manning Times: The growth of this town and increase of business has caused the streets to be more crowded with people and some times a little disorder occurs and for this reason the officers have secured the services of Mr. R.
