INS .& CO. YOUR S (OFFICE. Uncommercial Lazt. Artistic folk frequently have some what vague notions about business. Some of them are quite ignorant of it, others utterly Indifferent to it and oth ers yet hate the very na me of it. One In the last named category was Liszt. le had returned from a successful tour. and Princess Metternich. the wife of the celebrated statesman and diplo anatist, was questioning hrim regarding theroncerts he had been giving abroad. "I hear," she said, ",that you did good business in 'aris." To which Liszt gave the tart reply: "I only played some music there. Busi ness-that I leave to bankers and di plomatists." To another lady the musical cleric gave a still more tarcastic answer. -Ah, Abbe," she sighed. "what a great fortune you would make if only you could be induced to go to America to play!" "Madame," returned Liszt, "if you stood in need of that fortune, believe me, I would go at once." - Collier's Weekly. The Eye of the East. Damascus, perhaps the most ancient city in the world, claims the proud title of "the Eye of the East," which the striking beauty of its aspect from a dis tance fully justifies. Bright buildings which sparkle un der the Syrian sun rise out of a mass of many tinted foliage. To the north west stretch the long, bare, snow white ridges of Anti-Lebanon, while in charming contrast gardens, rich corn fields and teeming orchards form a brilliant setting on all sides. Winding through this profuse display of oriental beauty, the rivers Barrada -and Phege-the Abana and Pharpar of Scripture-lose themselves far to the east in Lake Bahr-el-Merj. On a near er view much of this glamour van ishes, and there is abundant evidence of general decay. A similar title is given to Athens In Milton's "Paradise Regained." It is: Athens, the eye of Greece, mother of arts. A PaIr of Catfish. A pair of catfish that were continu ously watched in a government aqua rium made a nest by removing the gravel from a corner. During the first few days after hatching the fry, bank ed in the corners of the tank, were at irregular intervals actively stirred by the barbels of the parents, usually the male. Subsequently the parents were seen to suck the eggs into their mouths and then estrude them with some force. The predaceous feeding habits of the old fish gradually overcame the paren tal instinct. The tendency to suck the fry into their mouths continued and the inclination to spit them out dimin ished, so that the number of young dwindled daily, and the 500 that had been left with their parents had com pletely disappeared in six weeks, al though other food was liberally sup plied. Goanod the Man. Gounod was one of the most fasci nating men I have ever met. His man ner had a charm that was lrmeistible, and his kindly eyes, as soft and melt ing as a woman's, would light up with a smile now tender, now humorous, that fixed itself'ineffaceably upon the memory. He could speak English fair ly well, but preferred his own lan guage, in which he was a'krilliant con versationalist, and he could use to ad vantage a fund of keen, ready wit. He was at this' time influenced by a re crudescence of that religious mysticism which had strongly characterized his youthful career, but his tone, though earnest and thoughtful when he was dwelling upon his art, could brighten p with the lightness and gayety of a true Parislan.-Hermnann Klein in Cen tury. __ _ _ _ Fuel In Aneient. Rome. The fuel of the ancient Romans was almost exclusively charcoal. This wasn burned in open pans, without grate or flue,-and gave economical heat for liv ing -rooms and baths. Careful experi ment has shown that such fires yield no considerable amount of dangerous carbonic oxide. The inconvenience of chimneys was avoided, the heat could be easily regulated, and a pan with a burning surface sufficed to heat a church seating 2,000 people. Work While You Pray. A squall caught a party of tourists on a lake in Scotland and threatened to capsize their boat. When it seemed that the crisis had really come, the largest and stronges: man in the party, in a state of intense fear, said, "Let us pray." "No, no, my man!" shouted the bluff old boatman. '"Let the little man pray. You take an oar!"-Success. No Apology Necessary. "I congratulate you most heartily," said the nearsighted guest at the wed ding, "on this happy-oh, I beg your pardon' I thought I was speaking to the bridegroom." "That's all right," the other man re plied. "I accept your congratulations. I am the father of the bride.".-Chicago Tribune. The Nurse. The London Hospital complains that the word "nurse" means too many dif ferent things, from the board school girl of fourteen, who gets 2 shillings a week for minding the baby, to the highly skilled nurse who follows the army doctor to the very battlefield. His Worst Experience. "Hez you ever been kicked by a mule?" "No, thank de Lawd, I never hez ex perienced nuthin' wuss dan a house fall in' on me!"--Atlanta Constitution. How many children to the drink Be by their parents led? We ought to gather in the young, And pledge them while we may, For danger, deadly, swift and sure, Is theirs if we delay. -Selected. The Bird With a Broken Wing. I walked in the woodland meadows, Where sweet thrushes sing; And I found on a bed of roses, A bird with a broken wing,.. I healed the wound; and each morning It sang its old sweet strain, But the bird with the broken pinion Never soared as high again. I found a youth life-broken By sin's seductive art; And touched with Christ-like pity I took him to my heart. He lived with a noble purpose, And struggled not in vain; But the soul with a broken pinion .Never soars so high again. But the bird with a broken pinion Kept another from the snare, And the life that sin had stricken Raised another from despair. Each loss had its compensation; There were healings for each pain; But the bird with a broken pinion. Never soars as high again -Selected. Cheer Up. Cheer people up by your pie ty. Do not talk as if -the world were going from bad to worse,. as if God;and goodness could not make headway against sin and as if -one's chief religious -duty was to complain. People know better and-you only repel them and misrepresent the bright - and blessed gospel of Christ. Study up the influence of Christianity. Find .out the facts. You will learn that it actually has trans formed the world. There is sin enough, and too much' left. There is woe enough. to break a sensitive heart if it had nothing else to look at. But God lives and rules and surely, even ifi slowly, he is bringing about thea success of his purposes and the fulfillment of his promises. Looke on the bright side. You will be the better yourself and' you will do more than 50 per cent. .more good as a servant of Christ. Helpful Thoughts. I would rather see the devil any day than a beautiful woman raising a glass of wine to her lips.. Neither the brain nor any part of the nervous circulatory system of the female is so consti tuted as to resist the insinuating evil effects of wine. Alcohol in any form or shape begins at once to undermine the constitution and moral character as well of womankind. The girl in her la ter teens who sits down at a din ner party somewhat shyly and with a pretty self-conscious ness, but who feels on better terms with herself and- those around her after her first sip or two of champagne, has already placed her dainty foot on the top most rung of the ladder that leads to the bottomless pit of the lowest social life.--Dr. Gordon Stables, of England. Prayer has its passive side. It should be listening as well as ask ing. Sometimes we pray for guidance, and do not give God opportunity to show his. will. Let us take the superfluities from our prayers, the "vain repeti tions," the unnecessary informa tion, the selfish insistence on some heart's desire, and we shall have time enough for listening to the Father's answer. Let us put out of our minds forever the thought that thirty years from now we are going to do something. You will not, un less you. do it now. There is more time wasted, more sin com mitted, waiting for a more pro pitious opportunity than from any other one cause. Behold "now,"~ not thirty minutes from now, not ten seconds ahead, but now: the "now" of Scripture has not the duration of a thous andth part of a second. "Now is the accepted time." not only to believe on Jesus Christ, but to serve him.--H. C. Mabie. Special Low Week Rates From points on the Atlantic Coast Line to seaside resorts.
