Sometimes a man's shady character keeps him in hot water. Capt. A. L. Lesesne and family of Silver are summering at Skyland, N. C. Dr. J. A. Cole of Georgia was in Man ning visiting his sister, Mrs. Julia Cut tino. Mr. J. F. Bradham left last Monday for Clemson College to attend the farmers Institute. The summer school ended yesterday and all of the teachers were much ben efited by the term. Misses Janie anC Olivia Ingram of Manning are rusticating at Lowrey ville in York countV. Mr. G. R. Thames of St. Marks re ports to us that on last Saturday he found open bolls of cotton in his field. Mr. W. P. Hawkins after a pleasant so-journ in the mountains has returned home to look after his horse and buggy business. Mrs. T. E. Fisher and Miss Edith Ware of Charleston came to Manning vesterday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Beulah Jenkinson. That was a pretty lot of teachers, or would it be more proper to say, that was a lot of pretty teachers, who at tended the summer school. - The coatest for the citadel scholar ships will come off on the 21st inst., and from the number of contestants we look for some close rubbing. A conmunication from Sardinia was accidentally misplaced and lost in some rubbish while cleaning up the office. We hope the writer will rewrite his article. A tobacco barn belonging to Henry Abraham in the Fork was destroyed by' fire last Friday morning. Poorly built furnace and general carelessness was the cause. Mrs. D. Hirschmann and her sister Miss Minnie Paget returned home this morning from New York, where they have been perfecting themselves in their millinery work. One of the amusing things connected with the hot spell is to hear a man who don't know the difference between al falfa and salsify say, "Purty hot, bu: mighty good corn weather." There will be a big educational .rally at Pine Grove on next Tuesday. .A number of distinguished speakers will be there and to cap the climax there will be a Salem picnic dinner. Messrs. E. P. Geddings and B. P. Broadway, the newly elected trustees of the Pinewood Graded School, were in town last Saturday on business with the Superintendent of Education. When you want a physic that is mild and gentle, easy to take and certain to act, always use Chambealain's Stomach and Liver Tablets. For sale by The R. B. Loryea Drug Store, Isaac M. Loryea, Prop. Among the swallows that have home ward flown from the pleasure resorts are Miss Mae Wilson from Pawley's Island, Mr. I. M. Loryea from Waynes ville, N. C. and Mr, W. Scott Harvim from Glenn Springs.. The Presbyterian congregation has engaged the services of Rev. G. M. Howerton, who will preach for them. until September 15th, when he returns to Princeton University. Services not Sunday. Tnere lives at Rimini, on the planta tion of Col. R. C. Richardson, a colored woman whose age is said to be 110. She is"active and industrious, makes her own living by farming, and every Sun day morning she walks le miles to church. The Rev. Hampton Boston, who misrepresented Clarendon in the Legislature in the glorious days of pil fericg, is her brother. Let Clarendon be the first to assert her independence and good sense, by organizing farmers township clubs, for protection against the greed of the oil mill trust. When the farmers of other counties learn what has been done in Clarendon, they will at once see it is to their interests to do likewise and the position to demand justice will be ac complished. We expect the meeting at Davis Cross Roads next Saturday to be the mother of farmers emubs. What came near being a serious ac cident happened to Mr. Robert Du Rant while driving over a bridge in the public road near his home. The bridge gave way and had it not been for his horses activity the probability is Clarendon county would have had to ay for a fine horse. Mr. James Reaves of the same neighborhood passed through town last Sunday and request ed us to call the Commissioners atten tion to the road and bridges in that section being in a bad and a dangerous condition. Mr. L. Dow Player has bought an in terest in the business of Mr. S. IL Till, and hereafter this concern will b~e known as S. I. Till & Co. Mr. Player is a oung man of very agreeable man ners, has lots of friends, and we hope in his new venture he will be success ful. Mr. Till is an experienced mer chant and is doing a full share of the business that comes to Manning. He will leave soon for the northern mar kets and on his return S. I. Till & Co., propose to bustle and create a bustle im the dry goods line. Professor R. Means Davis of th( South Carolina College on last Friday evening delivered before the teachers summer school a very interesting and instructive address on History. He made plain the duty of the citizen to the State and with a graceful flow oi language took his audience by the hand and led them through the ages, occasionally stopping to lay stress upoi some especially important occurrence. His address should have been heard by every student in this section. The next morning he delivered a very instructivi lecture to the teacher students. The government has not been satisfiec with the returns on the rural route fron this place and one inspector declined tc recommend its continuance, but througl: the intercession of Congressman Legare another chance for improvement has been given. The trouble is that the peo ple along the route do not patronize it sufficiently; There are too few box keep ers and too few who get and send mail. The route is a great convenience to the farmers and especially is it so in the busy season when they have not the time to spare to come to town, therefore the should see to it that Congressman Legare's efforts are sustained by those for .hoe interets he is working. There will be a large crowd at Davis cross roads on next Saturday to organ ize a farmers club, the purpose being to urge the farmers to hold their cotton seed until the mills pay a fair value for them. At this meeting, it would beun wise for office seekers to show them selves, they are not wanted, nor are the strikers for the mills wanted. We hope the attendance will be large, and that the organization effected will be the beginning of a thorough organization throughout the cotton growing bclt. The farmer who refuses to encourage this project is standing in his own light. and is playing into the hands of the gang who grow sleek and fat on the toil of the only class that is unorganized, and hence the prey of the classes which are organized. Escaped an Awful Fate. Mr. H. Haggins of Melbourne, Fla., writes, -Mv doctor told me I had con sumption and nothing could be done for me. I was given up to die. The offer of a free trial bottle of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, induced me to try it.' Results were startling. I am now on the road to recovery and owe all to Dr. King's New Discovery. It sure lv saved my life." This great cure is guaranteed for all throat and lung dis eases by The R. B. Loryea Drug Store. Price 50c and $1.00. Trial bottle free. The tobacco sellers are very much demoralized over the low price of the weed. Tobacco which last year brought 25 cents per pound only brings adout 1 that price now. Then there is another matter being complained of-the way the tobacco is bought. A farmerbrought a load to market, divided it into two piles, both the very same grade and quality; for one pile he got more per pound than the other. Why is this? There should be no thimble-rigging tactics and the management of the ware houses, if they mean to have honest treatment should investigate this state ment. We are more interested in mak ing Manning a first class market than we are in the individuals owning the warehouses and if there is any monkey business and we find it out we intend to expose it. Why is it, the same tobacco, when put in different piles, will bring a different price? Somebody intereted should answer this. Dysentery Cured Without the Aid of a Doctor. "I am just up frori a hard spell of the flux" (dysentery) says Mr. T. A. Pinner, a well known merchant of Drummond, Tenn. "I used one small bottle of Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and was cured without having a doctor. I consider it the best cholera medicine in the world." There is no need of employing a doctor when this remedy is used, for no doctor can pre scribe a better medicine for bowel com plaint in any form either for children or adults. It never fails and is pleas ant to take. Far sale by The R. B. Loryea Drug Store, Isaac M. Loryea, Prop. "Come and take pot luck with me, old friend," is becoming a common thing these days with the politician who is a candidate for re-election. It is a case of taking time by the forelock, and by beginning to coddle that class whose favor can be reached by way of their stomach, a year ahead, it gives them an opportunity to stuff this class several times to impress cleverness, and besides, it may be the means of getting ahead of those who may later on decide to be an opponent. .When ever a politician is now seen with sev eral of the voters going in the direc tion of the bacon and cabbage reservoir, the remark is made, "There goes a company of hash chewers." So the fel low who comes to town and gets a bid to "come and take pot luck " would do well to consider whether or not he wants to be regarded a "-hash chewer." DeWitt is the Name. When you got to buy Witch Hazel Salve look for the name DEWITT On ev ery box. The pure, unadulterted Witch Hazel is used in making DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve, which is the best salve for cuts, burns, bruises, boils, eczema and piles. The popularity of DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve, due to its many cures, has caused numerous worthless counterfits to be placed on the market. The genuine bears the name of E. C. DeWitt & Co., Chicago. Sold by The R. B. Loryea Drug Store. Rev. F. W. Gregg recent pastor of the Manning Presbyterian congrega tion resigned his charge here and has accepted a call to Pendleton. The severance from this congregation was due solely to the condition of Mr. Gregg's health, it being deemed ad visable by him to seek a mountainous climate. ~The congregation without a dissenting voice are high in their en comiums of their former pastor, and they one and all regret parting with him. As a citizen Mr. Gregg was highly esteemed by all denominations. his gentle modesty, and his manly bearing attracted the admiration of the community who join with the Presby terian congregation in the regret of his moving away from us, and we voice the general sentiment in wishing Mr. Gregg God's speed in rebuilding his constitu tion, and a glorious success in his new Mrs. Mollie Allen of South Fork, Ky., says she has prevented attacks of chole ra morbus by taking Chamderlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets when she felt an attack coming on. Such attacks are usually caused by indigestion and these Tablets are just what is needed to cleanse the stomach and ward off the approning attack. Attacks of billious colic may be prevented in the same way. For sale by The R. B. Loryea Drug Store, Isaac M. Loryea, Prop. A Clew. To Mr. E. A. Tenant Davis Station: On or about the 15th, of last Novem ber a man and woman of about the same description you gave through THE TIMES passed through here giving their names as Mr. and Mrs. Green, and about May they passed through here again accompanied by a little babe about five weeks old. We picked them all we could, but all they would tell was their names, and.I believe they were just such a couple, if not the same one that you described. Mr. Green says he has been a U. S. detective and says he has been in Dar lington, but did not say where he was from nor where he was going: but from the looks of the old gray mule he was driving the first time and the little bony bay horse he wvas driving the last time he must have been traveling a I ood long while. When they left here they went in the direction of Camden. hether this will be any information to you or not I do not know, but I hope ou~ will succeed in some mysterious way in getting your companion back home again. CLARENCE MATHIS. Smithville, S. C. SwsBetter Than Cold. "Iwstroubled for several years with chronic indigestien and nervous debili tv." writes F. J. Green, of Lancaster, N. H. "No remedy helped me until I began using Electric Bitters. which did me more good than all the medicines I ever used. They have also kept my wife in excellent health for years. She says Electric Bitters are just splendid for female troubles; that they are a grand tonic and invigorator for waak, rn down women. No other medicine can take its place in our family." Try them. Breedin, on last Mon day at 1:15 p. m., their eldest daugh ter, Mrs. Beulah Breedin Jenkinson, T wife of Mr. Charles F. Jenkinson, aged 25 years. The deceased was married on the 28th day of last September, and S on Sunday, 2nd inst., gave birth to an infant which did not live, and her illness b1 was critical until-the icy hand of death B was laid upon her to join her first born. The deceased was a type of self-sacri licing womanhood, a sunny, kind and affectionate disposition, beloved by all pI who came in contact with her, and one whose sympathetic nature will be missed even outside of her family cir- or cle. This visitation of Providence has tv saddened her many friends, and the en- so tire community has a sorrow for the fam ily whose afflictions have been great in deed. We feel this visitation with sin- cr cere sorrow, not only because it was a at pure life cut down so early, but because in we had learned to love her beautiful traits of character and to esteem her as one of our best friends. The funeral service took place at the Manning Cemetery yesterday morning and was conducted in a very impressive manner by Rev. A. N. Brunson. ri The pallbearers were Messrs. J. W- di Heriot, J. L. Wells, C. J. Lesesne. R. M J. Burgess, T. M. Mouzon and L. R. McIntosh. At the conclusion of the service A friends covered the tomb with a blanket cc of flowers moistened with tears of love. th When the funeral cortege was on its way to the cemetery the business houses, as a mark of respect, suspended L. business and closed their doors. 20 at Cures Eczema, Itching Rumors, Pimples and Carbuncles.-Costs Nothing to Try. The Legislature has given an opportunity to one young man teacher from each H county to get a years instruction in the principles and methods of teaching, and ur a most practical conrse has been ar ranged at the State College, with spe cial reference to the work of the public.w r more particularly the country seb ool, and with special regard to the needs of ci ill prepared teachers. While the I course is one of methods which any col lege graduate could pursue with profit, if ie purposes to make teaching his pro fession, yet it is especially adapted to th the capacity of a country school teacher who is not technically prepared for a th regular college class provided he have maturity and natural ability. Every e one interested should apply to Professor Patterson Wardlaw or President Ben- BC jamin Sloan. The next examination is i n Friday the 21st of August. Tt The scholarship is good for one year, 1 with the probability of renewal if desir- Li d longer. The special cours'e is prac tically an extension of the summer shool courses-a nine months normal M1 school for men teachers, similar to what Fc the Winthrop Training School in Co- ] lumbia used to be for women teachers. Let this county be represented. The H< winner, having no fees to pay and re- sic eiving $40 in money, can get through the season on about $50 additional for board and laundry. -___ Misterious Circumstance. fl One was pale and sallow and the oth -D er fresh and rosy.
