Nettles of Fores ton spent yesterday in the metropolis. Capt. P. P. Gaillard of Sumter spent yesterday in Manning. He is repre senting the Southern Cotton Oil Com pany. For several days past commercial travellers have been in Manning in droves. Mrs. Mary A. Webber of Spartan burg is visiting her son. Mr. O. E. Webber. Mr. Edward D'Ancona of Chicago is is Manning visiting his sister Mrs. Louis Levi. Rev. V. I. Masters, representative of the Baptist Courier, spent last Monday in Manning. Miss Corinne DuRant of Rome is in Manning visiting the family of Hon. John S. Wilson. Mrs. Mitchell Levi of Sumter has been in Manning visiting her sister, Mrs. Louis Levi. Last Saturday the mill and gin house of Mr. H. J. Wheeler near Sardinia was destroyed by fire. A negro near Davis Station captured an eagle weighing 18 pounds and meas ured 6 feet across his spread wings. The News and Courier failed to reach Manning this morning, and caused much disappointment to its readers. Miss May Wilson, after spending sev eral weeks in Columbia with her cousin, Mrs. N. G. Gonzales, is at home again. Mr. J. S. Evans of Workman has our thanks for a fine bunch of eschalots and a bucket of eggs, the latter at 12ic per dozen. The friends of Mr.: J. H. Lesesne will be glad to learn that he is improving. He has been down at Jordan with his sister, Mrs. Wilson. Mr. T. S. Rogan one of Summerton's successful merchants was in Manning last Monday full of hope for Summer ton's commercial future. The Sandy Grove school will close on the 24th, inst., with appropriate exer cises. We feel indebted for a kind in vitation to be be present. The Independent cotton oil mill bom panv will manufacture lard and soap as well as cotton seed meal. This work will be done at their refinery in Char leston. The county chaingang is now at work on the Fulton road about a mile from Paxville. The people of that section have been anxious to see the supervisor for a long time: A dark blue jacket was lost on the road between Manning and Summer ton, belonging to Miss S. B. Shepperd of Summerton, and she will pay a re ward to the finder. When you come to court next week, be sure and pay this office a visit, we will be pleased to see our readers, shake hands with them and write as many receipts as possible. Rev. J. D. Huggins of Paxville will attend the Southern Baptist conven tion in Savannah which meets on the 7th of next month. Who was it that said preachers do not have a good time? There should be a big turn out next Saturday to the meeting of the "old vets." The railroads will have reduced rates to Columbia and the people o: that city have prepared to give the old soldiers a good time. Mr. Lionel Stukes, student at the Charleston Medical college is at home for his vacation. Mr. Stukes has taken a fine stand at the college, and for the past few months held an important position in St. Francis' Xavier Infir mary. Yolkless eggs have been discovered on the farm of Mr. J1. H. Mc~night, and tradition says in the olden time, when a nest of yolkless eggs was discovered it was a sign of a shortage in the chicken crop, and made scarce the visits of friars. A few weeks ago we mentioned the prospect of a new dry goods store in this town to be composed of severa young business men. We are informed that it is now an assured fact, and thai arrangements have been etteeted to build a mammoth store. In the Bamberg court last week Joe Davis, the man who killed John B. King, was convicted of manslaughtei and sentenced to ten years in the peni tentiary. The man killed by Davis for merly lived in Manning and was a brother-in-law-of Mr. J. G. Plowden. The Manning team of ball tossers went to Paxville last Saturday and de feated-the Paxville children by a score of 40 to 6. The Manning boys say it was a very fine game, and that Preacner Huggins must have been a boy once himself, as he made an ideal umpire. We are told that price of real estate in Summerton is advancing every day Sunday's not accepted. .There are some lively business men in that pro gressive community, and when the Rogan brick yard begins to turn out its product, the building boom will be rushed. We are requested to announce that the survivors of Company -B," Tmira Regimenlt of "16-yeatr-old boys" undei the late Captain W. R. Coskrev meet with the veterans next Saturday foi the purpose of renewing the old or; ganization, and to arrange to atten( the Confederate reunion at Columbia. We are informed that there is enougi tobacco being planted on this side o: Salem alone, to make Manning a surn tobacco market, and when the Salen tobacco belt is considered with goot road facilities tO induce it to come here there is every reason to believe tha Manning will be the equal of any to bacco market in the State. A report has reachaed Manning tha Air. W. J. Rawlinson has taken to th< swamp on account of a pair of intruders at his house. We heard Shieriff Davis who is a brother-in-law of Mr. Rawlmn son, say if Mr. Rawlinson does not shov up soon he will organize a posse with: pack of hounds and go in search of him There is a rag-time song entitled, "Bil ly Baily, Won't You Please Corn Nome?"~ and the Sheriff says the sons should be changed to "Billy Rawvlinson Won't You Please Come Home'. Maj. Abe Levi and W. E. Jenkinsoi have inaugurated a very commenabli movement looking to the building of new road from Manning straight to Sardinia, and they are soliciting sut scriptions to aid the county to do thi work. The contemplated road wil shorten the distance to the tobacco bel several miles, and at the same tim avoid the heavy sand section. W~ heartily favor the building of this road and feel satisfied that it will brin; back to the subscribers5 an increasec business. There is no better pavin; investment than well built straigh roads, and we hope the efforts of Messr vi an Jen.Tnkinsone will be successfu. We are glad to state that Dr. M. D. IMurray of Pinewood, who has been very ill, has sufficiently recovered to be taken to his mother's home in Orange burg, and he will remain there until he has fully recovered his strength. The doctor's friends have been considerably alarmed, but the danger is over now, and in the course of a couple of weeks he will be hard at work at his exten sive practice. Broke Into His House. S. The school exercises and address on the 8th of June and the sermon on the '7th of June. For liver troubles and constipation There's nothing better in creation Than Little Early Risers, the famous little pills. They always effect a cure and save doc tor bills. Little Early Risers are different from all other pills. They do not weaken the system, but act as a tonic to the tissues by arousing the secretions and restoring the liver to the full perform ance of its functions naturally. The R. B. Lorvea Drug Store.
