In its early days, when, it is to be hoped, it was more toothsome than it Is now, the hot cross bun played some part in converting the people of these islands to Christianity. Pagan England was in the habit of eating cakes in honor of the goddess of spring, and Christian missionaries found that though they could alter the views of the people in reference to religious matters they could not induce them to withhold from the consumption of con fectionery. So they put the sign of the cross upon the bun of the Saxon era and launched it upon missionary enter prise which has extended through the intervening centuries and survived till now.-London Tit-Bits.
