No one could remelnber, although ust why a waiter should not be seen rith glasses as well as any other man as not apparent. "It's just like the wearing of beards," rent on the inquisitor. "The proprie ors of our Important hotels, restau ants and cafes will not permit either cards or glasses to be worn by their -aiters. It is possible that in some Id fashioned family or commercial otel the servitors may be found with ,eir noses straddled by optical helps, ut you won't find 'em along Broad. ray. "Now, this is a fact worthy of note ecause in every other calling in life ae number of persons wearing glasses on the increase, and even in our chools a considerable percentage of ery small children will be found rearing glasses, and while, as I say, otel, restaurant and cafe proprietors re opposed to the glasses, still I have eldom found a waiter whose eyes in cated that he was in the slightest eed of them. "You may argue that restaurant raiters are generally young men. Irant you that instantly, but all the ame thousands of men of similar age ave to wear them in almost every ther occupation. "The majority of those servitors Dmmence in boyhood, and the demand f their vocation causes no strain on le eyesight. Consequently that may ccount in a measure for the absence f any necessity for the use of specs. [oreover, the steam from hot viands rould render them useless probably." rew York Telegram. "I heard Mildred refer to your non ppearance," remarked Fayer. "You did? And what did she say?" "Said you performed an act of char -y by not coming on." It Puzzled Him. It is said of a former Marquis of 'ownshend that when young and en aged in battle he saw a drummer at is side killed by a cannon ball which attered his brains in every direction. [is eyes were at once fixed on the hastly object, which seemed to en ross his thoughts. A superior officer bserving him supposed he was intim lated at the sight and addressed him 2 a manner to cheer his spirits. "Ohi" aid the young marquis, wvith calm ess, but severity. "I am not frightened. am puzzled to make out how any man rith such a quantity of brains ever ame to be here!" Too True to Be Profitable. "How about that historid~al novel?"{ sked the publisher. "No good at all," answered the read r to whom It had been assigned.
