Sb ea - -th Salem Meeting. w] The county campaign was formerly St pened at New Zion last Friday. All f the candidates were present, and all )f them made speeches. The crowd, including quite a number from this side numbered about 200, and very lit tle demonstration was manifested. The H people of Salem are very busy at this th time which was one reason for the slim ye attendance, and another reason, is, that c all of the candidates are well known to t the voters, who have made up their of minds. Mr W J Turbeville acted as chair- t man of the meeting and at the outset f9 he requested a respectful hearing for tic all of the candidates and also requested t that the candidates refrain from "mud- is slinging." The order of speaking was w then announced and Mr. M. C. Gallu- th :hat was introduced as the first speaker for the senate. He started off by asking o the chairman to tell him what he meant at by "mud-slinging," that if it meant th Siticism of public records he would as not be restrained, for that was what he r intended to do. Mr Galluchat then , went into a discussion of national ques tions, and charged Mr Appelt with ad- c vocating ship-subsidies,expansion, and imperialism; with having misrepresen- w ted the people in the senate, by voting re to strike out the enacting words of the to bill to revoke the charter of the Virgin ia Carolina Chemical Company, by vot- to ing against the $200,000 pension appro at priation, and the $100,000 free school appropriation. He charged Mr. C. M. Davis with being interested in a trust, w with having voted with those who were >pposed to the dispensary, with voting ( to repeal the free pass act,. He charg- o ed Maj H B Rrichardson with voting for the repeal of the free pass act, and or the 'lue Ridge railroad bonds. Major Richardson came next, and olding a roll of papers in his hand yE which was .supposed to be manuscript, or but on account of the speech of the Ci speaker preceeding him he was forced hi to reply without the aid of this document w Major Richardson took up the Philip- E pine war and said it was cruel, that he MN was not a McLaurin man,and could not al be because he disagreed with him upon a de number of measures, that he voted di against the resolution denouncing Mc- se Lauring because he thought it was is right to do so, and before casting his B vote he consulted several friends about L it. He voted for the repeal of the free pass act because he did not think that any member of the legislature could be boight by a pass, and he voted aeainst striking from the books the Blue Ridge m bonds, because, as represented to him, jy they should not be striken from the t books. He told his hearers that he e had secured the pardon of a confeder- ct ate veteran, who was sent to the peni- ~ tentiary from Darlington convicted of t horse stealing, and read from a news- ax paper clipping, the account of this t horse-thief veteran from Darhington A getting his pardon though the efforts fo of Maj. Richardson from Clarendon, in t time to be in the procession at the re- f union in Columbia. He said he favored the free schools, good roads; and the" general up building of the country, that he was chairman of a very import ant committee, and was kept busy at tending to his duties. He gave his ef forts to the lowering of taxes, and would appreciate promotion.I Mr Davis followed, and after a n-i nouncing his candidacy, he explained how he come to be a candidate for the senate. He displayed a batch of peti tions which he claims called him for ward and with great reluctance he felt T it his duty to respond. He read several certificates going to show that he had loaned money to parties without re quiring any security and ini one in stance he satisfied a mortgage he held over some widow's property. He had1 something to say about his private af fairs, read from The Manning Time an extract about what the editor had2 to say about the farmers in his section not being independent, and disclaimed 3 being connected with a trust. Mr Appelt was the last senatorial candidate to speak. He threw no bo-4 quets at his audience, but from the outset replied to the assertions and 5 statements of his opponents. He took the position that National questions had nothing to do with our local affairs, and the injection of them was out of ~lace, and only calculated to confuse. 7 Replying to his connection with Mc Laurin, he related the intimate rel a tionship that had existed for many years. and that he would be unworthy of confidence had he turned his back upon McLaurin because political ene mies were trying to drive him out of the party. He said that he never claimed in a single editorial of his that the positions taken by McLaurin were right or wrong, what he cotended for,i was that McLaurin should come before the people for them to judge of his De nocracy, and not leave it to the politi cians to say whether or not he is a Dem. ocrat. Hesaid that the files of his pa per will show, that time and again he D declared if McLaurin did not prove he zw was advocating Democratic principles i1l he, although his personal friend, could not support him. He also told his TI hearers that he never did claim to be I j conversant with National problems, not being a candidate for congressional DON'T WAIT. He told his hearers why voted against revoking the charter of r rginia Carolina Chemical Co., why voted against $200,000 for pension ,d $100,000 for free schools. He claim- r that all of these things had been ex ined by him in his paper at the time d the people are familiar with it. He owed the condition of our county airs when he was elected to the sen a, and what it is now. He said when was sent to the senate the country s away back in debt, with a levy of mills, and as a business man, he ged the levy to be raised to 5 mills, id the following year lowered it to 4, ich wiped out the debt, saved judg nts against the county, and now the r v is 3 mills, with a fine prospect of king it still lower, if the county r thorities do their duty. We regret not being able to report e other candidates, because the r iter had been unwell for several - ys, the weather was intensely hot., d he went over to Mr Anderson Boy s house to rest. The meeting pass off pleasantly, no attempts to howl, ere was some good natured jollying some of the candidates for county ervisor, and we understand that ere was a little spat between Messrs *oods and Kennedy candidates for the >use.
