Marion Sanders, attempted suicide in Sumter by shoot ing himself with a' revolver through the heart, but a bone deflected the bul let, which passed through the body. Holladay, one of the trus tees of the Panola school, was in Man ning last Saturday for the purpose of getting the necessary funds to carry the children of that school to Charles ton. He drew from the school fund $40 and he received $30 in contributions. The contributors were: W. E. Jenkin son. $10: Louis Appelt, $10: The R. B. Loryea Drug Store. $5. and The Man ning Grocery Company, $5, making a total of $70. and it is expected about thirty-five children will go down to the exposition, taking the train at Summer ton this afternoon. Mr. Holladay and his fellow trustees deserve much praise in giving the children of their charge this, in our opinion, the finest educa tional opportunity they will ever have again. Chandler, who has been taking a great interest in looking after the well-keeping of the "City of the Dead," is willing to con tinue looking after it, but it takes money to employ labor and those inter ested should hand in their contribu *ions at once. The conditions are such ow that the work can be done at this time for much less than it will take if the matter is put off. It should not be put off. It should not be necessary to appeal to the citizens of Manning to make contributions for the well-keep ing of this sacred spot, and the only reason it is done is that the people must know to whom they might give their mite. Mr. W. C. Chandler is ready to receive contributions and he will give his personal attention to see ing that the graves are cleaned, and that the walks are put in proper con dition. The County (Commiss.ioners propose to spend about $1,500 to make an addi tion to the court house which, in our opinion, is not at all necessary. The court house is plenty large for the bus iness it does and the people who have the taxes to pay are making no demand to enlarge the building. A few years ago $2500 was paid for a vault, and now add another $1.500 will make our court house an expensive affair without com mensurate benefits. If the county has the funds, hire a number of gangs of able-bodied men at fair wages, and build up our highways. The roads and bridges put in good condition will do the taxpayers more substantial good than making more room in the court house. When people are petitioning the commissioners to fix the roads and bridges so that the tobacco growers can bring their product to this market, it is time to consider their convenience and needs. We understand that there is nearly $3,000 in the treasury: why not spefid a part of that money in hir ing first class road building? If the roads are put in first class condition the taxpayers can haul heavier loads: our towns and villages will be benefited: church attendance will increase, and in fact evefything which tends to the bet terment of the people will takd on new life, but adding twenty or fifty or 500 feet to the court house will not have such a beneficial result. On his return home on the train he was heard to say, "By hally, sir, the exposition is the grand est thing the world ever saw, hey, Bub? And when St. Louis comes off with its grand display Gabriel might as well blow his trumpet, hey, Bub?" We know the captain has traveled much in his day and many are the sights that he saw, but we are glad that he has been spared to see this grand show, which merits his enthusiasm, and we hope we shall be able to shake his hand and take a snifter with him at t', St. Louis show. We have heard of some of the Captain's gay larks on the midway, but as he might go down again before it closes we will not give him away, and then he might learn some thing on us and it isn't fair to tell tales outof school, but if it is true that he offered to bet he could beat the wax figure huntsman shooting in the gov ernment exhibit, and got mad and said the fellow had no manners, because he would not answer him, then we should liked to have been there to see the Captain's Irish rise. Captain, if this is a yarn get after Bub, he has a whole string of them on you. It never did pay to take children with you when you are out for fun, by hallies, sir, it don't. Whooping Cough. The attempt was made on last Wed nesday night to rob the store of D. WV. Alderman & Sons Co., at Alcolu. The thieves broke into a blacksmith shop, procured tools and while attempt ing to effect an entrance into the store Messrs. Wilson Dickson and Gray, clerks, sleeping in an adjoining room were awakened by the noise, and Mr. Dickson fired in the direction where the burglars were supposed to be. The firing of the gun frightened the scoun drels off, but a trail of blood was left behind showing that the shot took ef fect. The next day Constable WV. T. Kelly, of Foreston, who by the way, is a terror to bad characters, was en trusted with a warrant, and accompa nied by Magistrate Youmans, went to Alcolu, and not long after their arrival, the suspected party was pointed out on account of a strong smell of turpen tine. Mr. Kelly told the fellow who calls himself Preston Dray to take off his shirt which he did, and felt quite safe when there was no signs of gun shot upon his body. Kelly however, was not so easily led off the track, so he requested that the pants be taken off, to this Dray objected, but Kelly in sisted and when it was done it was dis covered that the fellow was well sprink led with the shot, and Dr. Brockinton relieved him of a number of them. Dray was brought to Manning and lodged in jail, the other fellow has not yet been apprehended, but he had bet ter make himself scarbe now since Kelly is after him. The Kind You Hae Always Bought Anticipating what our opponents will say in criticising our leading editorial of last week, we will say that four years ao when it Iooked as though we would not have any opposition for the Senate, before making a definite announcement, upon the advice of a friend we wrote to. we think, about two gentle men whom we regarded personal friends to ascertain the sentiment with regard to us, and if there was any de sire for us to represent the people. After having written to these two gentlemen, we began to consider the matter carefully and came to the conclusion that in case of opposition we, by securing endorsements in advance, would be taking a snap judgment, and would also be violating the fundamen tal principles of the primary system. Wec therefore put a stop to that method and ever since have advised against it. A man seeking p~ublic favor can, with all propriety, write to every voter in the county . asking for support, but when he undertakes to bind the voters in advance of the primary he is per verting the object of the system and he puts the voter in the position of signing away his suffrage before he has an op portunity to hear the candidates and the issues involved,and really before he knows who will be in the field. In signing a petition for a man to run for ofice is like signing a mortgage on your milch cow in advance of obtaining a few pounds of butt meat on a lien.
