The Columbia State of last Saturday had three columns of its leading editorial space, devot ed to extracts from the editorial page of this newspaper, and al though it displayed a disposition to refrain from mentioning our name or the name of this paper, it was fair to both Senator Till man and ourself. We presume its reason for not mentioning the name of this paper is on account of a personal antipathy the edi tor of The State has toward us, and we regret exceedingly that such a condition exists, for we can say in all sincerity that we bear the editor of The State no ill will: we have at times differ ed with his views on public mat ters, and perhaps have struck him hard, possibly through mis understanding, but through it all, we have never entertained the slightest ill will towards the man. Aside from some thrusts -that we might expect from those with whom we have contested on opposite sides, we were very much gratified by the extended notice The State devoted to the controversy we had with the senior Senator. Notwithstanding the fact that we have been a very enthusias tic supporter of Senator Tillman, we have on a number of occa sions criticized his course, as the files )f THE TIMES will show, and !en we were defending him from the frequent published charges affecting his . personal character we were sincere in the belief that the charges emanated from enemies for political pur poses and that there was no foundation for them. We be lieved all along that Tillman was a shrewd politician, but our confid'ence in his personal integ rity was absolute, and it remain ed so, until the whiskey concern refused to show their books to an authorized committee: that circumstance was the beginning of our consenting to anything like a willingness to even listen. and at the time, we urged that it was Tillman's duty to himself and his trusting people to see that an investigation was made We admit that it is rather awk wark at this time to bring charges of corr'uption after we endeavored to defend him when' the charges were being made byI Tillmnan's political enemies, but when they made the charges they relied solely upon bitter as sertions and did not attempt to show any proof or reasoning. It was absolutely impossible for us to get any tangible evidence go ing to show that charges which had been frequently made had a foundation. Up to the early part of last October all the informa tion we could get was based upon rumor, and since then we have seen documentary evidence which knocked the scales from our eyes. Senator Tillman becoming a director in a corporation had something to do with opening our eyes, and our willingness to see proof if there was any against him; the inconsistency was too glaring. He denounced such things everywhere, and at all* times, and then to see his name associated with one, and him too, in a position to guide its business policy was enough to open the eyes of the dead, not to say the living. It is known to all men of business that corporations are not in business for pleasure or charity, they go in for dollars and cents, and the direction of the investments is usually look ed after by the large holdings of stock, a nominal stock-holder is not favored with a directorship; it therefore takes money and a whole bunch of it to enter the directing circle. When we first saw it stated that Tillman was a director in a corporation char tered in New Jersey we said nothing about it for sometime, expecting to see the statement denied, but no denial came, and we commented upon it which was our right. When we used to see the hints about the' governor getting things from the peniten tiary we thought his political opponents were making moun tains out of mole-hills, and that what he did get was an occasion al basket of vegetables for the mansion table: we never had the slightest suspicion that ship ments were regularly made from the penitentiary to Trenton to Tillman's home, and only since last October has anything like tangible evidence been shown to us. We have our sins as other men, but those who know us will not place the sin of hypocrisy at our door: and our- continued support to Senator Tillman is at tributed to the implicit confi dence we had in his personal character. When we began dif fering with the Senator in the methods he was adopting to carry out his plans, that . differ ence did not go so far as to cause us to relinquish oui- personal or political friendship for him, but we suppose, that because we [us inethods of party policy, those who had tangible evidence mainst his personal character permitted us to see the docu nents. Had it not been that we were shown the written evidence, we would today, although op posed to Tillman's idea of muak the Kansas City platforit the the test of Democracy, (ontinued to him our friendship. We al ways gave him a faithful sup port, and now we expect to op pose him equally as faithful, un til he shows that he is an inno eent man. regardless of the ci rc uminstances and evidence against him. In the last campaign when Senator Tillman assailed the preachers, we did not enfldorse his recklessness, and said so in trong terms, at the same time. we objected to the course some preachers were pursuing: we supported the dispensary sys tem. against prohibition. but had the issue permitted a vote on local option, we would have given it our support in prefer ence to either prohibition or dis pensary, because we \vant the people to control it. So far as the effect on politics in Clarendon county is concern ed, when we wrote our editorial we did not take that into consid eration; none of our editorials are written with a consideration of the political effect: we write what we believe, and the people know it, and they are fully able to take care of their county pol itics without outside aid or inter ferance. We are proud of the fact the votes of Clarendon are not carried about in the vest pocket of a polititician, nor will the people of this county submit to dictation from Senator Till man or any other man holding public office. If our services in the State Senate have met with the approval of the people of Clarendon county, they do not care a rap who we favor for the United States Senate. Senator Tillman or any other man living outside of Clarendon cannot influence them against us. We believe the people of Claren on endorse our position to keep the primary pledge as it is; they want no white man who will pledge himself to submit to the decision of the majority and support the nominee to be ex luded from coming before the people. .We do not say they will vote for McLaurin, Hender son, Johnstone, Hemphill, Evans, Latimer or Bryan, but we do say, with the party pledge as it is, and has been since 1894, a white man can go before his peo-I ple advocating what he pleases, and the people, and not the pol-1 ticians, will decide who shall do the representing. If we were cringing time-server we couldj very easily keep down opposi- I ion to us by being all things to. ill men, and not take a positive stand anywhere, until others had trst felt the public pulse, but ur idea of a Representative and t i journalist is to speak out fully md honestly. As an editor we let our views be known on all 4uestions as soon as the ques-c :ion presents itself: as a Repre- 1 entative we endeavor to ascer :ain the wishes of the people, md carry them out as faithfullyc is our ability permits. When sve go to the State Senate, we ire the people's servant, to hon-t astly look out for their interests, 1 see that the county is not tax urdened, and that such laws are enacted that will reduce Claren- 1 ion county's expenses that her ax levy can be light. The peo le of Clarendon county have :he intelligence to know thatpour ndividual support to national uestions have no bearing in the state Senate, but that those natters are entirely for Con ress. Therefore The State's bservation "with some interest :he results of this personal and political breach upon the politics f Clarendon county" will possi bly not be gratifying to it, if it expects the people of Clarendon to permit a clash between two [ndividuals in different branches f the government service to ef Eect their judgment one way or iother. THE PEE DEE ELECTION. To-morrow an election-will be eld in the upper portion of Marion county to decide wheth er the new county of Pee Dee< shall be established. Under the< onstitution all new counties formed shall contain not less bhan one one-hundred and twen- 1 t-fourth part of the population if the State, not less than one and one-half miillion dollars in] axable- property, nor less than 400 square miles. No old county 4 shall be reduced to less than] 500 square miles, nor to less tax mble property than two million 1 :lollars, and a county line shall aot run within eight miles of 1 any court house. The people of 1 the proposed county of Pee Dee 1 have complied strictly with all the requirements of the consti tuton, but arec being fought up- 1 an all manner of technicalities by the people at Marion court 1 house. On two elections before has the new county been carried,i only to fail upon some technical1 question laid and concocted by the resourceful minds of lawyers1 at Marion. The constitution of< 1895 contemplated the establish ment of smaller -ounties, which promote rapid and general de-< vlopment of the State, and where a majority cf the p~eople 1 in any section comply with all t the requirments and by a fair t election carry a new county they1 should be allowed to hav-e it. If Ayer will re produce in the Florence Times, Senator Tillman's letter and our reply to it, his readers will dis cover some very important i11 formation that will be news to them, because it refers to mat ters which were never discuss ed on the stump and which are not twelve months old. Our friend of THE TIMES cannot af ford to let his readers know the truth, and tries to hide it by brushing it aside as "stale." There is only one man in South Carolina that has successfully averted punishment whith those tactics and he is Senator Till man a man of brains, all the rest that have tried those methods were sickly imitations.
