G Died at his home in Williamsburg county on February 28th, Mr. Julius P. Gamble, in the 67th year of his age. Mr. Gamble's name was as familiar in this county as it was in his own, and among his warmest admirers are people living in Clarendon. Mr. Gamble was a familiar figure in politics in the days when it required nerve, manhood and discretion to steer the ship over troub ulous waves. He served his county in war and in peace loyally and honorably. He was a man of endearing traits of character, a man of lofty and noble im pulses, one whose friendship was wor thy of being sought. In his death Wil liamsburg and Clarendon have lost a noble citizen and friend and the State one of its most patriotic and loyal sons. -his signature is on every box of tho ger.;no Laxative Bromo-Quinine Tableta .ho remedy that cures a cold in one dad We received a letter from Sergeant A. C. Davis who is in the Philippines, in which he says that he has been rec ommended for a lieutenancy in the army by his commanding officers. He says that the insurgents are laying down their arms every day and there is very little 'to do at this time. On the 7th of January he had a skirmish in which none of his men were hurt, but the enemy had five men killed. Ser eant Davis says the enemy is about starved out in the mountains. In a barrio recently twenty-seven men, wo men and children were killed just for refusing to supply ue insurgents with rood. He says the fighting now is worse than the old Indian warfare in Anierica rnd if an American falls into the hands )f the enemy it means almost certain leath. The natives that have joined the American forces are doing "the >usiness," as he expresses it, that henever they go out "it is dead nig ;ers and a few rifles, spears and bolos very time." The troops are coming come and he thinks his regiment will eave the islands about the latter part >f May. Davis is hopeful of returning come a commissioned officer under the ew army bill, and if there ever was a eserving case it certainly is his.
