With this amount together with sources of income from licenses and tines, we see no rea son why the tax levy should not be re duced at least one more mill. r ad when the General Assembly meets we believe that the legislative delegation from this county will make the deduction. The levy for this year is one mill less than last year, and we hope that next year it will be at least one mill less than this. The taxpayers will appre ciate this saving by their representa tives. Guaranteed. 4 An attempt was made by Jim Deas, alias Sheep, last Thursday to escape from the chaingang. which is at work at "Puddin' " Swamp in Salem, and it resulted in his being shot by Guards man J. H. Windham. Dr. Woods was sent for and, on examination, it was found that he had been struck with 114 No. 2 shot, peppered from head to foot. Mr. Windham told us that Deas in formed him that he was going to leave, and that he might as well shoot, for if he didn't when he did get away he would kill him. Deas trotted off under a bridge, holding a spade up to his head as if to protect that part of him. Windham ordered him to halt, but he disregarded the order: ' he fired and this did not stop him. A trusty was sent to catch him, but Deas got away from the trusty; then Windham brought him down with another shot. Deas was serving a twenty-five day sentence for petty larceny, charged with stealing some razors from Mr. Nimmer. His wounds are not regarded fatal. He Fooled the Surgeons. Clarendon has a place in the Engross ing Department filled by a most estima ble and worthy lady who, in all proba bility. will be elected State Librar-ian. In that event it seems likely that a fair daughter of another county will get her place. I can't see why our county should lose it. Those girls of ordinar-y intelligence and that write a plain, swift hand, who have heavy responsi bilities up)on them should file their ap p)lications with Solicitor J. S. Wilson and one with Attorney General Duncan Bellinger and give the delegation the opportunity of pressing their claims and working for them. Besides, here are our County Treas urer, County Supervisor and Clerk of Court having positions filled by young men who can battle with the world and easily make a living in many ways that a lady cannot, and many of our fair daughters burdened with the load of filial dependence, fully competent to fill the places. Let them file their ap plications and recommendations before January 1st and if they are ignored the people shall know the reason why. It is no use for us, the men. to sit by and wait for our modest girls to press themselves forward, for they wtill never do so. It is our duty to look out for them. Let us urge them to file their applications in their own hand, mod estly, and as a representative of only the white people in this respect.
