Ervin received in formation by telephone that a negro was in Alderman's stole in Salem offering a gun for ,sale for $4. A description of the gun was immediately "puoned" over and it was ex actly like one of the guns stolen some time time ago from the window of the Manning Hardware Company. Purvis, the murderer of immie Blackwell, came off at Lillington Court House. Harnett County, North Caro lina, and the defendant put in no defense. The jury found him guilty of murder in the first degree and the culprit was sen tenced to be hanged October 13th. It is said that his wounds received by being hit qy a train are very serious and may prove fatal before the day set for the execution. Choice Winter Rye Seed, for sale by R. B. Loryea, the druggist. The 'News and Courier issued a trade review which puts to death the often heard story "that Charleston is a city of the past, and that grass is growing in her streets." The showing made by our contemporary brings us tidings of good cheer and all the people throughout the State should feel a pride in Charleston's success. The enter prise exhibited by the "News and Courier" will not be wasted, for where there is so much pluck the admiration of the people is bound to be won. There is considerable complaint among some of our mercbants and even with some of the trading public, about the drumming practice in this town. We are told that the people are considerably annoyed when they come to town by the persistant efforts of runners who are drumming trade for stores. In some instances these fellows go into store lots and even the stores to take custo mers away. The council should prohibit this practice, as it can only breed trouble and it has a tendency to keep trade away from the town. When a man comes to town he does not wish to be pulled about and be wants to enjoy the privilege of trad ing where he pleases. MAKE THE MOST OF YOURGZiLF. If the press dispatches are tr.ue the Penn sylvania disturbance was one of the most diabolical use of official power on record. At the scene of the Hazleton strike there is now an accupation- of over 5000 soldiers and hundreds of men out of employment. The cause of the troops being there was the shooting down of unarmilti laboring men who refused to work for starvation wages. These men were in the public road making no demontrations of violence, and as if by a stroke of lightning a volley was tired into them by the sheriff and his deputies, about a dozen were killed outright and* many wounded. He is a young man who has by his sterling merit made himself a factor in Manning's business cireles, and his future prospects are of the brightest. Both bride and groom have reason to be proud of each other and no couple ever started out on the matri monial sea with better prospects for joy, happiness and plenty.
