C., March 1.-Henry Tindal, eC7o .,ex-postmaster of Packsville, Claren de-v )unty, was arrested upon a warrant 1 isl by United States Commissioner S. A. 'j N for forgery. The circumstances of U- ese are as follows: A short while back r just efore Tindal turned over the post- r offic ib J. M. Bradham, the new postoffice wa,- ,rned,.together with, as claimed by I Tial, most of the effects of the office, in cio-7g particularly the money order bl. book and postal note blank book and the - amp of the money order department u.- for officially designating the legality of,,e money orders and postal notes. Tir-;du, and another party were noticed to Sbe pretty flush of late and the suspicious of Pozamaster Bradham were aroused, and upo- investigation the, fact was disclosed that Tindal had been using the blank books by filling out some of the blank me-,y orders and postal notes and forging t ne of the present postmaster to them. J ing the old stamp of the money order d tment it was an easy matter to isue y orders and postal notes that to all rances were legal. Being satisine -twas being done by Tinudal, Post r Bradham began telegraphic com cation with the superintendent of the y order departmentgwhich resulted in -nt being issued today. It having eea learned that Tindal was in the city to - dc- Assistant Postmaster Emmit I. Reardan oi Sumter postofflce was detailed with Serge-ant J. K. Bradford of the police force to -d and arrest Tindal. Reardan located qis ian in a meat market on Main street, i seemed not the least suspicious about wanted. Leaving the market Rear d: found Policeman Bradford and went to the market and a clerk told Re:rJuiu i Tindal was in a back room talking to t.-other men. He stepped out and told Mr. 3radford to come in andarrest Tindal I which he. promptly did. _a the way to the commissioner's office PoV,:eman Bradford and the assistant post n-.er had Tindal between them and when It grocry store of Z. E. Walker on Main rewas iached he made a break and .n:-eded in nearly running over Reardan, -iLr-. was gathered in by him and the police a!er. After a short tussle Tindal was; 'coled down And pulled out a book which he said he came in to the store to leave wheh he claimed was a Masonic book coa- t t'iig secrets. He was taken out again, but the officers after going a few yards de ined that it was best to get that book going back demanded it. As the book,1 being taken from the hands of te t y with whom it was left, Tindal made a i vrAb to keep either of the efficers from get tirng it and struggled against them having it. Policeman Bradford, however, got it, I and Tindal was held firmly by the police- C - and Reardan until the Sumter post- C offic-e was reached. Upon examining the book it was found to contain a number of pcsal notes all filled out and signed with the name of the postmaster at Packsville and- the stamp of the office thereon. He --s committed to jail to await the arrival of : postoffice inspector. The money orders zand postal notes are undoubtedly from the lank book said by Tindal to have been 1"nrned. When he was arrested Tindal seemied to be badly scared and trembled f considerably. He made no denial of his ( guilt and did not ev-en ask why he was ar- f re'nted but seemed crest-fallen and showed ~igns of guilt. Ixrsr.-Thzere is great commotion in pos tal circles just now over-the forgeries and t fraads perpetrated by Henry C. Trindal, late C pstmaster at Packsville, S. C., and ms white accomplice. The number of the first money order is stud by J. M. Bradham, the ne* postas-s erat Packsville, was 101, and the first pos- C Zb1note issued by him was 201. All money t orders and postal notes from Packsville bar~ing lower numbers than these, and 9 having the name of J. M. Bradham -written ' thereon, are forgeries. Packsville mon I orders from No. 75 to 100, and postal notes s from No. 126 to 200 are missing. The negro is already in jail at Sumter. 1 Julius Brunson, formerly cf the Fork, is 'I Tindal's accomplice. He has passed some of 5 tia money orders already; the departmzent h th.'refore thinks he has aH that are missing. I Blrumson "ran with" the negro constantly.
