THE MANNING TIMES. WEDNESDA\, MARCH 28, 1888. LOCAL AND OTHERWISE. A young man from Newberry was recent ly expelled from the South Carolina Col lege, for plagiarism. Mr. H. S. Cunningham has begun the publication of the Spectator at St. Mathews. It is an eight page paper, full of interesting readig. While in Charleston last week, Maj. H. H. Lesesne had his pocket book, containing about twenty-five dollars, stolen from his room in the hotelat which he was stopping. Mr. M. L. Thompson, living in Oconee county, when he had been married only three years was the father of six children. He is a twin, his wife is a twin, and he has three pairs of twins at home. It has not been fifty years, nor was it fifty miles from Y uing, since the costs in a certain 'n4 about a yearling worth '. , parties to the suit .4eYen - a. The case was In court about eieven years, and the hide of the ye..rling was almost worn out carrying it to cort so often. Miss Callie L. Haynes, of Spartanburg county, took her diploma at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania last week. She is the first woman in the upper part of the State that has graduated in medicine and perhaps the second native South Caro C lina woman that has taken a diploma in a medical college.--Charleston Dispatch. A fearful railroad accident occurred on the Atlantic Coast Line, near Blackshear, March 17th, in which twenty-three persons were killed outright, and about fifteen wounded. Several of the wounded have since died. The accident happened on a trestle, just after - crossing a river. It is probable that it will cost the railroad com pany $150,000. The Marion Star says, "Very few of the people of Marion county have any idea of the amount of money that has been loaned in this county by the Scotch Land Loan Associations: We have recently ascertained that they hold mortgages on 25,000 acres of land, and that the anmpnt is increasing every year, while the debts are being re duced but little, and we might say that they now practically own 25.000 acres of land in this country." Baby Bumting Agaln, One of the greatest literary 'hits of the season is *e story of "Baby Bunting ; or the Alphabet of Love," by Laura Jean- Lib bey, which is at present being published inthe columns of The ew Tork Family Story Paper. The paper containing the opening chapters of this wonderfully popular ro mance appeared on the news stands this morning. Norman L. Munro, Publisher, 24 and 28 Vandowater Street, New York. Williamsburg hiews. Col S. T. Cooper, of Black Mingo, died on the 12th inst., aged 88 years. -Mr. James T. Nettres, of Lake City, was shot wit a pistol ball while ina fight with Mr.Madison Powell on the 16th inst. A negro child was born a few days ago on the plantation of Mr. S. W. Beardon with out any arms. Where the arms ought to have been there was nothing but little short nubs. Farmers tell us there is less corn planted so far this season than they have ever known before. This has been caused by the great quantity ot rain that has fallen and the cold weather of the past two weeks. The ground was too wet and cold to safely put the seed into it.
