A teacher, in catechising her class of boys at Sunday-school, asked: "Who was the strongest man?" A little chap of eight years answered, without a moments hesitation: "Sul livan, now ask me who is the best sower." Died Jan. 23rd, 1887, in Fort Gaines, Ga., Dr. James E. Easterlinq, in the 65th year of his age. The Ad rertiaeer, published at Fort Gaines, pays this'tribute to Mr. Easterling's! character: "He was a man of genial manners, and a cultivated, high ton ed christian gentleman." The annual report of the County Treasurer, prepared by his efficient Clerk, Mr. J. G. Huggins, is publish ed to-day. The recent Legislrture has reduced the printing charges for these reports one-half, and now, as is very justly remarked by the Palmetto Post, their publication is no more than "a labor of love." Price 5 It is gratifying to learn that the "Dime Readings" are to be revived; and we take pleasure in announcing that there will be an entertainment of this character, together with an oyster supper, on Friday evening, Feb. 5th, at the Grove Academy, for the benefit of the Presbyterian Chureb. Last Thursday being the day set apart by the Presbyterian Church for religious service, in behalf of the wouth of the land, services were held 'mud well attended in the Manning ?resbyterian Church. The Rev. Mr. Mc. McDowell preached a most excel lept and appropriate sermon. A splendid opportunity is present-. ad to equip a military company in Manning. If a company can be organ ized the Adjutant General has prom ined to furnish the arms and accoutre ments. The young men of the town have not been slow in giving expres sion to their willingness to utilize the opportunity. A list with nearly aj hundred names to it has already been procured and a meeting appointed fcr next Friday evening. The rendez vous is the lower story of the TrMEs building. Tindal and a reporter of the1 Necs and Cour'ier, these words were iixiintentionally omitted: "Dr. Tindal was the author of both these bills, and did much by his con servative course and wise counsels to secure the passage of both in the House without opposition." The bills spolen of are the two agricultural binls-the. experimental station bill and time bilk rferriug to nh anizast+on of the Ag cueltnral bureau. This is a high complient to Mr. Tindal, and its omissiou was in no wise intentiondl. It escaped the printer, and being a separatb sen tence, the omission passed unnoticed by the proof reader. Xr. Mason Explains Satlsfactorily the Failure of His Troupe to Perform in Manning. EDITOR oFTIMF:-It was not until after I had been detailed and sent, to make preliminary arrangements; for the Foreston troupe to visit Man ning. and had published it through your paper, that the inability of two or three of the members to meet the' appointment was made known. They, constituting some of the most impor tant characters in our plays, conse quently put a stop to our proposed visit. Neglect and press of business caus ed the non-appearance of an explana tion in last week's issue. And I here by offer an apology to the citizens of Manning and the public, assuring them that unavoidable circumstances only prevented the fulfilling of the Bngagement. C. If. MASON. Foreston, S.
