Bradham, Auditor; Dr. H. H. Huggins, Treas urer; and Messrs. John A. Mahoney, J. J. Bragdon, and John B. Mellett, Trial Justices. The last named was appointed in the place of Mr. C. M. Bichardson, at Summerton. Mr. Walter J. Burgess, who has ably filled the place of chief composi tar in this office for the last year, has resigned his place ini order that lhe may complete hia education. Mr. B6/gess is an upright, intelligent, in dustrious young gentleman. He laves this office with the kindest wishes for his future success. The Grove school re-opened thiq morning after the Christmas vacation. The teacbers of this institute are Miss Virgitnia Ingram, of Manning, and Miss )tennette McCutcheon, of Wil iamsburg. Miss McCutcheon, who has recently come to Manning, is a graduate of the Sumter Institute, and is highly recommended to successful ly fill the place of teacher in the Grove School The Town Council has by an ordi nance levied on all real and personal property within the corporate limits of Manning, a tax of twenty cents on every hundred dollars. The same ordinance requires a return to the clrtof the council by property hold era, of all their pro~perty, real anid personal, for taxation, between the first and the tenth of January- The ordinance further provides that this tax shall be paid between the 20th and the 31st of January. The following tracts of land were 1%d Monday, Salesday: 100 acres sold'at the suit of Brad ley vs. Bradley, for $325 to R. Ci. Pur dy;4(0 aerdzing to John Woods, sold to Trumibo, Hinson & Co. for $20 to satisfy a mortgage; two tracLs of land of 193 and 202 acres: respec tively, belonging to Hermon . T. Strange,, S.. E Strange, and W. E. Blackwell, sold under a foreclosure suit, were purchased by A. J. Salineas & Son, at $1 per acre. The lands of the estate of James H. McFaddin, adt vertised for sale, were eold to W. T. Rose, E W. Moise, and Mrs. Eliza beth McFaddin for nominal prices.. The day was cola and most disa. greeable, but quite a crowd were present at the sales. A Nebraska man was carried forty miles by a cyclone and dropped in a widow's front yard. He married the widow and returned home worth about $30,000 more than when he started. The only trouble is that there are more cyclones than thirty The coldest weather experiencd thus far this winter, visited us last Sunday. The coniequence was that but few ventured out, and small cou gregations wcre at both the Presby terian and Methodist churches. Mr. Wolkowiskie, the keeper f the oniy whiskey saloon in M.n ning, ou learning the action of th 'ouncil, promptly made his apar anee and informed them that. his bu siness would not bear such a heavy tax, and that he would have to close 2p shop. The Council renaining firm, Saturday morning the 1st of January 1887 found the Town w ith out a har room. Mr. Wolkoviskie complThins Litterl against the action of the Town Coun -il. He says that having no intiaI tion that the license was to be raised to such an exhorbitant sum tha: would force him to close his busines oa the 1st of January, he had a larg er stock on Land than usual, which an only be gotten rid of at an im mense sacrilice. He says-the license imposed is fabulous ar.1 unheard of. And again that a con(itional license s something most extraordinary. The Town Council met again Mon av evening. The following license ompromse was agreed to: For only oe Bar $1,200 instead~ of $1,500: wen two licensas are granted $750 each; and where there are three or ore licenses at $650 tach. Thursday night at the Aademy. Owing to the very bad weather on that evening, a small au ience attended. The actors perform d as well as any amateur troupe that we have ever seen. The proceeds, in all, about $20. On the samie evening the young men of the company furn ihed an elegant supper for the Troupe t the residence of Mr. W. W. Rlich urg.
