(?><&<?'<$><$<$><$<$<$>&<$><$*$<$<& + <s> ?> ROTARY NOTES * >$> The regular fortnightly luncheon of the Newberry Rotary club was held in the grill room of the Newberry hotel on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. There was a good attendance and a delightful program was carried out. An interesting report on the Rotary Executives' conference, which was recently heid at Charlotte, N. C., was made by Rotarian Secertary Hal Kohn. It developed from this report that "Dollar Down" Hal told the Rotes of the Thirty-eighth district a thing or two on this occasion?and there is no doubt of the fact that he clearly demonstrated to that buncr of Rotarians that he is one of the besl secretaries that this district boast* of. Rotarian Kohn's talk was thoroughly enjoyed by the assembled Rotes. Rotarian Ben Cromer then delated the club with a discussion oi the Turko-Greek problem, which is now commanding the attention of the whole world. RotaTian Cromei "started at the beginning" of the trouble, citing the versions of the various authorities in regard to it. It was a learned discourse, rendered in ~ a most interesting manner and entertaining manner?just as this Rote is wont to do. Then it was that Rotarian Zach Wright was calied upon to tell the club something about "100 per cent attendance"?and when he had concluded, he had each Rote to sign a Uimeolf fry K2iU> WV/ uvvvuu ?*?v luncheon on the Slst inst., which has been designated as the "100 per cent day." It is a foregone conclusion that every member of the Newberry club will be present, if possible, on that occasion, and each and every one will exert every effort to make it possible. Rotarian Wright made a good speech; in fact, he admitted it himself! There were lots of other good things on the program, but President Haskell Kibler was forced to call a halt on the proceelir.gs on account of the lateness,of the hour. Such being the case, the omitted parts will be dished out to the Rotarians at the next luncheon. The program was interspersed o nnmHer r\i nld time sonsrs. led WlbU u uwmvv* v a ^ by Rotarian Earle Babb?with Rotarian Jim Kinard at,the piano. This part of the proceedings was greatly enjoyed, for, be it known, the Newberry Rotarians enjoy singing almost as much as they do eating. The next luncheon will be held on Tuesday, October 31st, as stated, and the whole bunch will be there "with bells on," as requested. Enough said! STANDING COMMITTEES OF REEDY RIVER ASSOCIATION I. H. CALDWELL TO ADDRESS TEACHERS The teachers of the county are requested to meet at the Newberry high school auditorium on the last Saturday in October, being the 28th day of the month. The purpose of the meeting is to reorganize the county teachers association for the work of the present school session. It is earnestly desired and urgently requested that every teacher in the county attend this meeting. I sincerely trust that every teacher in schools of Newberry county is sufficiently interested in his or her work to be willinsr to soend one hour each month in meeting together -and exchanging ideas and getting acquainted with one another. Dr. J. F. J. Caldwell, the scholar and historian, who has but recently written a poem in celebration of his 85th birthday, has kindly consented at my request to deliver a lecture on the life of some one or more of the prominent men of -the past either of the state or natives of Newberry county. I suggested that he give us a lecture on John C. Calhoun whom he knew personally, but the subject is left to him. It seems to me that it would be helpful to the teachers of the county to study the lives of some of the great men of the past. South Caro' ? The teachers can take back to the school room the information they get from a study of these great characters in history and give it to the children/ My experience and observation is that our people are woefully lacking in a knowl-' edge not only of their state but of their own community and county. Let us study for one hour together some of these great characters in our own history. E. H.
