The Newberry Tigers put over a heavy artillery barrage, and for j r a while it looked as if the whole Clin- j ton force would be annihilatd. When the smoki and dust of the initial at-'* tack had cleared away five tigers had . gone "over the top." However, the| Blue Devils came back with a coun-j tr attack, and at the close of the ninth; assault the casualties stood six to six.! In the opening of the 10th Captain! Scurry came up with "Big Bertha", and shelled the enemies left flank, J wheih fled in disorder, and two more ( tigers penetrated the enemy's strong-' i 11 -i- i j ai.. i noia ana lunieu mc uut , The enemy made a strong counter attack. But Bodie drove them back to, * their dug outs with the hand grenade. The Clinton casualties were heavy. | The whole fighting force and civilian employees were completely overcome. Registration Day," according to the act passed at the last session of the legislature to regulate school attendance of children within certain age3. On this last Friday of July parents and guardians of children within the compulsory school age, 7 to 14 year.;, inclusive, are required to furnish the i chairman of the district board of t.rus- ' tees the name, age and sex of the p'nildren under their charge. The' district chairman is to send a copy of j the report concerning the children to 1 the county superintendent of education not later than August 15. He is also to supply a list to the teachers cf the schools which the children will attend. When a district employs an ' attendance officer, as is provided fcr { in the act, the attendance officer ;ak :5 the census and makes the reports required instead of the board chairman. ? . A part' of the section of the act reads as follows: j - "Every parent or guardian having x eharge of a child or children between J the years of 7 and 14., inclusive unless an attendance officer is maintained i.i their district, shall make a report to the chairman of the board of trustees of his or her district on last Friday in < July of each year, showing names of such children in their charge, the age,' ' sex and race, and name and local address of the parent or guardian of each such child; and any parent or guardian having charge of such chili cr children who shall fai: to make report at the time aforesaid, or shall wilfully make an incorrect report, shall be subject to such fine and imprisonment as is hereinafter imposed for nonattendance." WHEREAS, a written petition or j request made and signed by at least one-third of the resident electors and a like proportion of the resident freeholders of the age of twenty-one years of school district No. 2G of Newberry county, the state of Soui;h Carolina, having been duly presented to us requesting us to order an election submitting to the qualified voters or electors of said school district the question of issuing and selling coupon bonds of said school district, payable to bearer, aggregating the sum of two thousand ($2,000) dollars in such denominations as we may deem necessary, not to exceed eight per cent of the assessed valuation of the property of said school district for taxation, bearing a rate of interest not exceeding six per cent per annum payable annually, at such times as we may deem best, to determine whether said bonds shaii be issued or not as -a* provided in Section 174o of Volum [ of the 1912 Code of Laws of sni< state; AND WHEREAS, a plat of sai< school district was made in 1912 b; E. 0. Counts, a competent surveyo and is of record in the office of th ilerk of courtvn Newberry county ii rhe 'aid star? in Plat Rook 1S at pag 179. Now be it resolved that for th purpose of determining- the issue o said bonds as authorized in Sectici 1743 of Volume I of the 1912 Cod Df Laws for said state, an election i hereby ordered to be held at th school house in said district on th 16th day of August. 1921, the polls t be opened at 7:00 o'clock in the fore raoon, and closed at 4:00 in the af ternoon, on the question of whethe =uch bonds shall be issued or not, ii which election only qualified voter :>r electors residing in said school dis ;rict shall be allowed to vote.
