SECRETARY HOUSTON SCORED, j j Coofreiimtn Kitchin, Democrat, Sayt, He Can Not Understand How ^ Any Man Who Claims to Have a ^ Single Impulse . for the Masses ^ Could N-?ke Such Recommendations As Those Made by the Secre- ; *?? T?mhii>v. *?*/ VI U1V m J . Washington, Dec. 9.?Leaders in ( the senate and house today decided ^ to ignore Secretary of Treasury H Houston's recommendation for huge < tax increases. Not only will his pro- j pcsals for higher taxes be rejected, >( But all his estimates for appropria- , , . tions win be slashed. The senate finance committee, in accord with the policy adopted by the house ways and means commit- , tee, determined not to attempt revision of the revenue law until the new administration comes into power. Its view then, rather than those ot Secretary Houston, will be considered. . , A surprising feature of the wide?pread revolt against the treasury chief's recommendations was a vigorous statement by Representative Kitchin of North Carolina, ranking Democrat on the ways and means committee, and who will fce the minority leader *in the -next congress, awaiting the Houston proposals as wholly intended "to relieve the cor\ poration interests and millionaires." $*rere Criticum. Mr. Kitchin declared he could not understand how any Democrat could make such recommendations. Going further an his. criticism the North Carolina representative charged that 4l?o ftf tip. treAsnrv. "uii d'er Mr. Wilson," were the first to attempt to dict^te ta congress in matters of taxation., V ; ^ Chairman Good of the house appropriations committee, which under the new system has jurisdiction of all appropriation measures, declared the estimates of *4,653,346,749 would be cut down to approximately $3,500,000,000. For the current year a total of $4,859,000,000 was pwwided. Senator Smoot of Utah, ranking Republican on the senate finance committee, said the estimates will be slashed a billion and a quarter and possibly a billion and a half. Th? Biggest Cut. Both Chairman* Good and Senator Smoot 'agreed the biggest cuts, will come m tfee army, navy and sundry ?Ivi2 bills. V Republican members of the senate finance committee also agreed that no. action woaid be taken an the reguest of business interests of New York, Philadelphia and other centers tot a deferment of the last quarterly payment of excess profits and income taxes due December" 15. Secretary ? ? - . ... . .... . Houston's opposition to tins proposal, jffe was felt, makes it certain that president Wilson would veto a bill Scanting the relief. In his attack on Secretary Houston's report recommending great tax increases Representative Xitchin i^d: "I think it is the most unwise, unjust, un-Democratic and pro-Republican report that ever emanated from any department since its beginning. "The whole intent and policy of his recommendations are to relieve the corporate interests and millionaires who for the lask four years have laundered and profiteered upon the people to the extent of $50,000,000, of a billion and a half or two billion dollars of taxes annually and to place. "I trust the Republican secretary ;>f treasury under the next administration will have more consideration for the Republican congress than our secretaries under Wilson's administration have shown in Democratic congresses, and will not assume to tell congress what it shall tax or shall not tax and the rate of taxation. <<T* rvarhr in the IX tllC l/Ciiiutiawv/ vj congress were to adopt the suggestions of Secretary Houston's report, it would be of no use to hold future Democratic conventions, for no Democratic candidate hereafter would get anything like as many votes as Governor Cox 'did in the last election, and the Lord knows he got few OT>nno>h " V4*vw^... DARDANELLA PLEASES BIG ACADEMY CROWD Daily Press,, Newport News 5(Va.)> ^November 30. Dardanella played at the Academy last night to a very good crowd and the show came up to all expectations of being "A Jim Jam Jem of a Jazzy Jamboree." It was a combination of all styles of musical come dies, "reviews," "follies," "scandals," etc., all blended into a lively, happygo-lucky entertainment. A very good crowd witnessed the performance, considering the rain. The whole cast played their parts very ' well, the work of H. C. Overton, Helen Me ree, Harlan Hoagland, Tom Dayton, Rita Lawrence, Dorothy Garrigue and Elsie Esmond, as Dardanella, being especially good. fh? various | vaudeville numbers pleased the aud- j ience very much* | Honor Roll' Reederville School. ,.
