Chairmen of Republican and Demo-!^ cratic Organizations Summoned I. to vjive i neir i ?muvuj. Chicago, Aug. 23.?The senate campaign investigating committee to * day made plans for what it announced would be a "thorough apd exhaustive investigation into the republican ; and Democratic national campaigns.v j The investigation, it was announce^, J would not only deal with methods of! obtaining and expending money in the campaign but would cover reports of alleged offers of federal positions as an inducement to political activity. Gov. James M. Cox of Ohio, Democratic nominee, was sent a telegram requesting him to appear before it before next Monday when it will reconvene to presert any evi'dence he may have to substantiate ihis charges in campaign speeches that the Republicans ''were raising i a campaign fund of $15,000,000." In addition the committee ordered; > leaders in each party to appear be-1 fore it with all books, papers and in- j formation in their possession concerning1 the campa^n activities, financial or otherwise, of their party. Included in the list summoned were Will Kays, chairman of the Republican national committee; Georsre j White, chairman of the Democratic; national committee; Fred Upham and Wilbur Marsh, treasurers respectively of the Republican and Demo-j cratic committees; Homer Cummingrs,i former chairman of the Democratic j national committee: Senator Miles: Poindexter of wasnniKio II, Cixaixino.iij - . of the Republican senate campaign j committer: Representative Michealj Phelan of Massachusetts. Represerita- j twe Simeon Fess of Ohio, and Guy! Scott of West Virginia, members of; the Republican congressional committee. and Representative Frank] Doremns of MifhiVan and Representative W. N. Oldfield of Arkansas of the Democratic congressional campaign co^m i+tee. Several other witnesses will be summoned^ before the committee session begins, Chairman Kenyon of Iowa said. Each witness summoned today was instructed to brino- anv o+her nelsons who might be able to furnish information con/?fvrrn*-n<r the campaign activities of I either party. Will Kays and George White signified their willingness in New York today to attend the hearings and give j any information possible. Senator Kenyon said he talked with Hays by j telephone this afternoon and that the j Republican told him "he welcomed ! the investigation." Fred Upham, Republican treasurer, also is understood to be in New York. i j Chicago, Aug. 23.?Governor Cox, Democratic nominee, will probably be subpoenaed and compelled to ap- j pear before the senate campaign j committee, which today announced*! plans for investigating the Republi- j can and Democratic national cam- j paign, unless he comes ,of his own i free will, a member of the commit- j tee told ihe Associated Press tonight. ! This member of the committee said j that its members felt that Governor Cox must prove his charges that the Republicans were raising a $15,000,000 campaign fund or withdraw them, and that the committee was prepared to go to any length to ob-: tain evidence in the matter. | No official subpoena will be,issued, however, until the committee meets next Monday. "If Governor Cox has not given us a satisfactory reply by that time I feel certain tin: a subpoena will be issued," he said. Senator Reed said he had not re- j ceived an answer to his telegram to i ^ _ Governor Cox up to tonight when he Wr~ "leTt for a short trip to Wisconsin. The statement was made when members of the committee were shown dispatches quoting Governor Cox as saying he "sawr no use in appearing before the committee," aiding that he would furnish it with evidence, but felt that he "should be allowed to do so when he saw fit." Included in the matters to be tak- j en up when the committee recon- j venes next Monday will be an inves-1 taxation of the Oklahoma Democorat- j ic senatorial primary, in which Sena-j , tor Gore was defeated, and the preconvention Kansas campaigns, it was said. <$> <?> j RED CROSS NOTES. <s> <3> <8> I ^<S>^<S><$>^<8><?<S><8><$><S><?<?<S>^ The conference of the Newberry j Esd Cross chapter held in the court ; house recently was of interest not ! only to the members of the Red Cross j but to the people of the entire i county. j Tho Newberry chapter was inrt;a-|i live in establishing the health uriw | for the county, and is now carrying; out its health service program by its ; hearty cooperation with the unit.
