CUMM1NGS MAKES X ' FINE IMPRESSION Not as Muck Enthusiasm Exhibited as at St. Louis Convention in 1916. | K. Foster Murray in The News and ^ Courier. San Francisco, June 29.?While the Democratic national convention i of 1920 started with -several times as much "pep" as the Republican convention a few weeks ago, it is a fact that the enthusiasm of the con vention the first day did not reach the height touched at St. Louis four years ago. Homer S. Cummings is a "find" as chairman of the national ' committee and made an admirable keynote speech on taking the stand as temporary chairman but in delivery, he has no such spellbinding % power as the Hon. Martin H. Glynn of New York, who had the convention at St. Louis going fairly wild with applause every minute or two, aTtrl Senator Robinson of Arkansas, x who is slatecTltor permanent chairW> man, will have to surpass himself if he can equal the masterly presentation of the Democratic record ,and principles fcy the late Senator Ollie James of Kf>tficky in assuming the same chair in 1916. Nor were the galleries here so demonstrative as -the opening of the convention as they were at St. Louis, for some rea-. son there were a number of vacant . A good deal of this strength is in the Palmer column, however, and there is a lot of bitter feeling in the attorney general's campaign against the former secretary. That of course does not satisfy the Irish militants and rather irritates them but there is no chance that the platform can satisfy the militants in ahy case.
