place where he cast his tent was tej him Elysium. j -?~ j I could not wnte a stow of this! i I nature without a word about the j roads. The Xewberry road from here to Chappells would be in pretty ?ood condition if it had the application of the split log drag, even, but still bet-ter if this creeping tractor and scrape ! which the town has could be applied, j And then the small bridges were reU pfaced witk concrete bridges and H|^?*then the job would be fmtehsd. The HqReI roads in McCormick are pretty good i ^^^Bfor ordinary dirt roads and in Green* '1 1?+r?r% cr\il rnjn3!?;. WOOCl W16y 2TC uuiiuiii^; ivy ovi? * . but truly the worst piece of road over which I have yet driven is from the Connie "Maxwell orphanage to the city limits of Greenwood and it is no worse than the stretch from the city f limits of the same town to Pegram, the only, difference being the com rows in the former being larger and: deeper. Both are worse than the old j roads they used to build on marshy j places out of "big pine poles. And yet j the county is spending big money on j top soil roads, and after looking at! diese top soil roads that are being j built in many counties I have come to the conclusion that the first thing that the commissioners should do, / who have the matter in hand, is to see that the engineer should study first the traffic that is now being car' ried over the roads, and then the nature of the top soil and be able to determine the character of the top neo hprause all of them that QVtl bW UUV) I hare seen do not last and even the! best of them will not last unless some j provision is made for their mainte-j nance after they are built, but Green- j wood is now. building right down to > the river that connects Greenwood with Newberry and unless Newberry does something to build ^his road to Chappells the people of Chappells will . very -naturally turn their trade to ward Greenwood and Ninety-Six, the I distance to Greenwood in miles being about the same that it is to Newi i ?x -a? f berry, but a good roaa wouia cut, un. Vat least three-fourths of it. People . no longer count distance in.miles but iif hours and minutes. It behooves NeVberry to do something about the building of roads to Chappells and to Whitipire as well as something to . keep repair the road to Little Mountain, or the trade from these sections; of the county that naturally belongs to Newberry merchants will * to other De cllUitc.icu aau u< ? towns oii account of the roads. And while talking about roads since I have seen the work that the creeping tractor and scrape has done for the streets of Newberry and in consideration of the heavy and constant traffic over the streets I am fulrly persuaded that the best thing the x / cojinty could do, and that would serve f ^ the greater number of people and at 1 -1?? the least cost, is to purcnase auuuo / four of these machines and put them f to work over the roads of the county I and very soon we would have good I roads all over Newberry, and then E they could be kept in repair and it (T , would be a great deal better than a ' bond issue of $400,000 because even that sum could at best build only a few miles of road, and after it was built unless it was would not be good for long. j ^ E.
