LEVY OF 14 MILLS NOW UP TO SENATE Two Mills for Good Roads and Thre< Mills for Schools Not Included. The State, 3rd. The senate finance committee com pleted its work on the general appro v priation bill yesterday afternoon anc 'v * * \ the bill as it goes to the upper hous< carries appropriations for state pur poses of $6,731,359.36. With revenue from departmental sources, the com mittee estimates that a levy of 14 mills will be adequate. As .the bilj went from the house it carried a total appropriation of $5,828,261.28, foi which a levy of 12 mills was required, \ The senate committee has thus in' creased the amount $903,098.08. The 14 mill levy does not include the twc mills for construction of hard surfaced roads nor three mill constitutional tax. k Far Above Last Year. ^ The total amount appropriated last year was $4,102,351.02. A levy of 9 1-2 mills was required in connection with departmental resources, but the comptroller general was able to reduce the levy one-half mill because of the increased values in property or the tax books. In making his report of the budget I commission, Governor Cooper recommended that appropriations be made m to the amount of $5,466,631.65. The fcmiRo nnnrrmriation bill carried 2361. 629.63 in excess of the amount thus recommended by the <?hief executive. The general appropriation bill now calls for $-1,264,727.71 above that - recommended by the chief executive, and he will likely veto certain sections should the bill be passed as it now stands. - Some Increases.
