The five room dwelling owned by Brooks Mayes in rear of the Farmers Oil Mill was destroyed by fire on'^ Friday. It was occupied by Berry Suber. The alarm came in about 3 o'tI-.I:. The department responded promptly but the building was beyond the reach of the hydrant and! all the boys could do was to stand and watch the fire consume the building. This is an instance where the chemical appartus would have < come in and with it probably the < building could have been saved. As < it is it was a total loss. Suber saved i most of his household effects, xne ^ fire was discovered between the ceil- j ing and the roof. 1 I Mt. W. RICHARDSON'S STORE DESTROYED BY FIRE "ire Started About 2 O'clock in the Morning?Supposed to Have Been Set by Rats?Small Insurance. Mr. J. Walter Richardson, who i ibout two years ago opened a store j it his home near Jolly Street school louse, and who was doing a fine business had the misfortune to' lose ihe house and all the goods by fire in Saturday morning about 2 i'clock. When the fire was discovered the building was so far gone that nothing was saved. Mr. Richardson estimates his loss stround $5,000 and had only $1,300 insurance on house and goods. He had been in the store until nearly 1 o'clock that morning work i - i ? i i : v.'/. mg" on nis dooks ana arranging mo j accounts so that he might be away on Saturday and the young men who would be in charge could run the business. The fire was discovered i about 2 o'clock and had so far made , headway that he could not save any- j thing. Fortunately he had some $500 j worth of goods in the depot that he j bad not moved up to the store but which he expected to haul on Saturday. / He does not know how the fire j started unless it was the work of rats i with matches. The loss comes very heavy as he had but recently gone into business and was just getting in good shape and doing a fine business. ! He is not the least discouraged and will rebuild* as soon as he can ; get the lumber and will continue business at the same place. His many friends sympathize with him in the heavy loss he has sustained. A BIG COTTON FIRE. > M. A. Coleman Loses 106 Bales of Cotton?Warehouse Struck ' by Lightning? No Insurance. On Thursday afternoon at about 3 o'clock lightning struck the cotton warehouse of Mr. M. A. Coleman of Saluda county and set the Jiou3e on fire. Mr. Coleman had 106 bales, of j cotton stored in the house and he1 thinks that all but about 25 or 30 bales is a complete loss. He; may be j able to save the amount mentioned. The house was practically n?W and cost several hundred dollars when j built only a few years ago. He had; no apparatus for fighting the fire j and about all he could do was to see it burn.y It is a very heavy loss. Ifr. Coleman earned no insurance either on the cotton or the hpose.
