LETTER TO MRS. A. F. TAYLOR FROM HER BROTHER Horcheim, Germany, Dec. 25, 191S. Dear Sister: Amid the trials4 and -pleasures of a soldier's life I shall strive to keep you "well posted concerning myself. I hope you and Asa are having the merriest and happiest time that you have ever enjoyed during the Christmas holidays. When I gazed upon the guard list yesterday afternoon, December 24, and saw the name of private Bedenbaugh, I thought that luck was all against me. Then and there I decided that all pleasures of the Christmas ioliday were destroyed for me. Our present guard duty is real strenuous work. I went on guard at three o'clock, December 24, and was relieved today, December 25, at four o'clock, anrt tnnicht T nm tirpri and worn out. The officers tried very, very hard to make Christmas day a pleasant event. They secured material forv the preparation of an excellent dinner. They also secured a Christinas tree which was beautifully and tastefully decorated. We were each presented with some chocolate candy and with a nice and serviceable souvenir. The following was the menu for dinner.; Chicken, mashed potatoes, chicken J dressing (which was very good), chicken gravy, sweet peas, pickles (olives and cucumber), pudding, chocolate cake, pocoa and bread. As the guards were permitted to eat first we J certainly aia our auiy ior aooui minutes. Then, too, it was served in j an excellent manner. While we were! seated at a comfortable table. Tell Asa that he should have been here to aid us in devouring this very excellent spread. To crown all our pleasures many of our Christmas packages arrived (my package was among the number). It ceased snow- j i ing this morning and though it was : ! partly cloudy it was a real nice day. j The Germans do not seem to take I much interest in celebrating Christ-; mas. I think I have about completed J the report of my Christmas news. I j thought all of you would be very glad to know we had an excellent dinner J and our officers did everything pos- j sible.to make it a pleasant occasion. I am sure each and every one of usj are profoundly grateful to them. I was fortunate in obtaining a few J copies of the Observer that had been j sent to John W. Dehart. I saw sever- j al letters in these from the A. E. F. \ ! Among these were letters from j j Thomas and Johnnie Fellers. These i ! papers sure did seem just like a letj ter from home." We all hope that I conditions will soon be normal again and that we shall soon have the pleasure of being; sheltered under the old parental roof once more, and we shall truly say, "Be it e'er so humble, there's no place like nome."
