prun.Y Pf:Hso> u. , Miss Luclle Lathan has our thanks for an invitation to the Wintlirop commencement. Jrne second to fourth. \lfss Li?cile is a member of the large graduating class, which numbers 173. Mr. Geo. B. Irving, superintendent l* maAfinor in YowHor 01 liie t'lictuiaiuiua iucchuo ry, fell in so nicely with our people that he did not seem like a stranger. All seemed to feel as though they had been knowing him for some time. ITr. C. *L. Leitzsey returned last week from the Columbia hospital, where he had been to see Mrs. Leitzsey. Her \ many friends will be glad to know that she is improving. .Mrs. Geo. W. Pearson spent Monday in Columbia with her daughter, Mrs. A R Harman. She was accompanied home *byf her granddaughter, little Frances Harman. Miss Agnes Houseal of Cedartown, Oa., and her aunt, Mrs. Hawkins of Rome, are visiting relatives in Newberry accompanied by Mr. Henderson of Cedartown. Another long troop train passed up throi\Tv Vcv>Thursday. What with these trains and the cavalry, along with the thriving war talk heard under the Chautauqua tent, our people here are having the cause "brouV*"1* and are realizing mrtrp than ever that we are in it. On Sunday morning while the cavalry troops were passing through Newberry one of the prettiest sights we saw was little Martha Xuel Summer. the bright two-one-a-half years, old daughter of Mr. and 'Mrs. Clar^n^e Summer, waiving her little flair at the soldiers, many of whom noticed it and a-cfcnowledged the tribute with a salute or the wave of a hand. Mr. Amos Taylor has a wonderful field of wheat on a Bush River tract. "What makes it wonderful, aside from its fine condition and handsome ap pearance, is the fact that he sowed the field in oats, or at least when he sewed the grain he had just bought ten bushsls of oats from two stores in town, 5 bushels from each store; that is, he called for oats at both places, got the packages, went home and sewed the stuff with the above result. The c;f:zen^ of (Newberry treated the passing troops so well that the sentiment of the men was expressed by one of the number when he said he wished he could eerie through here a?rair>. The boys were all made to feel that they had Newberry beim?d them solidly. There were many attentions shown them, such as nuiii be- of c;t*.Ten> in automobiles go-tig " "* ' " A T? 1 Kvirt orui (r TQ ' Ta}]- ' Jf, '?;i < .z:iu ui jHgime then fr> :'>v' \ civir'* them rides, enr^ * 'iInint Ti/!i""ncr th3r.i trie 1 "t<t". The <bill went to the Senate this way. but this proviso was knocked f)ut there and was finally passed with no exemption feature the very thing for which Congressman Dominick fought. I believe the 'Senate action -waS brought about by Mr. Dominick's fight. I heard several around the capitol say "Have you heard about Dominick's speech- on the Liberty bond bill.? It was fine and attracted - ? ? ? ? J >-? 1 ^ + " UUirS-UVr<*Uit5 aucauvu. So you can figure had he not mad'! his speech and if our State would have lost even three hundred thousand dollars in taxes and Pennsylvania over three m.llions you can get some idea of what all the taxpayers in the Ignited States would have lost. He received the congratulations o? many men in the House and in tne Capitol, many of whom he never knew before. T think it very probable he will send his speech to his constituents. and if you get one 'be sure to read it. He has been urged by a great many to do so as it is probable the ni'estion will bob up again and it is desirable that his ideas on the subject, become better known so as to prevent the passage of any such legislation in the future. Of course the idea of the Secretary was to make the Liberty bonds more popular as an investment for the banks, and he wasn't looking after the tax end for rne States.
