He said that the work of the Red 'Cross might be summed up in three things and very briefly stated. First, it was to relieve suffering. Second, it was to shorten the war, and third, to bring j a better peace when the war is over. Lieutenant Patten of Canada was presented and said he had been three years in the war and would try to tell something of the trenches and the fighting and the use of the war mask when the gas attacks came. He showed how the mask was put on and said he was a little out of practice just now in its use, and it took him a little longer thnn it would if the gas W2P coming. He said he had not been very seriously wounded, that he had Ween shot two or three times but that did not amount to much. H? talked very interestingly about the actual war and our people gave him good attention. Col. W. H. Hunt then presented ! Mrs. A. P. Coleman as the mother or o Vcwhprrv bov who had won a cross of honor for bravery on the field. Maj. John< M. Kinard said he thought the "ofd dau should also have sonic j of the honor and ho introduced Mr. I Coleman, both Mr. and Mrs. Coleman \ occupying seat? on the rostrum. -\ j speaker then arose and paid n h'gh { tribute to woman and her part :n the j v;v:* and sa'd that while the boys j were iroing there was a youncc agv."- j ' it" r*'"in had si yen herself to the work? and was av.*aitii?sr ord^rs to join the Red Cross workers I Over Tbore. an:l at this point a 1 er."-1 tiful girl arose and took her phie?; beside the speaker.
