Holmes, private, slight ly wounded, are names in the list o; casualties among the American Ex peditionary forces reported uftdedate of Washington, March 25. Thi:gave a great deal of anxiety in Newberry as many people believed thfirst earned here v.as a mis-print foi Lieutenant E. E. Stuck and that 01 iver W. Holmes was the young mar . who recently married a Newbern girl. But the Mr. Holmes who mar ried here is not in France, and Mrs A. T. Brown does not believe it is oui Dr. Stuck who is among the missing as she has received a letter from' him dated the 1st of March and mailed the 4th and he had been transferred to the nautical department of th*= service. Then again his name is Eugene Earl Stuck, hence it is not altogether probable that it is he. At any rate we all hope so. Mr. Luther S. Every acre of cotton olanted takes that much away from the production of foodstuffs.' 7,abor is scarce, making hands few and hard t*? get for garden work. It is imperative to produce the food to feed the armies and the people. If there is nil thp money cnn't buv some tVnn^ to eat. The stopn3'_>e of th'i?o to eat means famine. It is necessary, if we are roing to aid the government in winning the victory, that we must have wardens and work them. Tn order to work the gardens and brin^- success to the country all the stores should be c!o?ed early to enable the people generally to do their duty and obey the call of their country, for it their duty aDd the country calls.
