????? ? fc. I W.M*?WW 9 Ipr JerelH arJ ||a5i ; Entered at the Postotfiee at New- j fcerry, S. Cn as 2nd class matter. i, E. H. AULL, ED1T0K , Friday, February 15, 1918. ] \ ? ( It was too bad that just at the tim| we thought we were getting thing-; j in good shape to print a real news- j paper that we should fall upon a loi j of bum paper for that issue, which we ] could neither print decently nor fold, j but so it happened. But that will | work out all right and we can find a remedy for it. I Talking about comparing and remembering February days we recan : a February day not so many years;; ago, and still a little further back I ( than the one called-to the mind of Mr. j Eddy. It was February 14, 1881, and i it was' a Monday. We were then , teaching school in the town of Abbe- j ville and had come down to, Newberry on the Friday before. That Monday was a beautiful balmy spring likp sunshiny dav That has not bee-i so long ago, and yet some people j will think it has. There have been ' many changes in the years that have' come and gone since then, Dr. D. B. I Johnson, who was then principal or the school in Abbeville and now the president of Winthrop college, came down to Newberry with us on tiiat occasion. I ilis SUUlU 13 niHlvu V.",. j the evening of the 12th. We do not know yet what sort of a day the 14t*i j is going to be at this time. The in- ] dications tonight are for rain. The sunshine came out again ou 1 Wednesday and the 14th this year was j a beautiful spring day just similiar j to that. 14th oflSSU There was seme dust raised in the city streets on Tuesday and 'no j sprinkler wagon anywhere in sight. We heard one merchant say that enough damage had been done to his stock of good* during the day by the <iust to have purchased one or two j sprinkler wagons. l\Me suppose as i there has been so much rain and snow recently the city fathers neVer thought that it would be a good thing to sprinkle the streets, or maybe tne water is scarce. There was no scarcity of water because' on the VWednesday following the dust the hose was used and tho paved streets were., washed clean. Would it not be a good idea to get some sweepers and sweep the pave 1 streets every eveing 4ncr uusmto-) bourse, and then they would be clean the next morninsr. The washing process every now and then does not last long enough. That was a great speech of Presi ; Wi1clr\? on/1 nro Kdlidl'O tVlot 11 I VICUl T? ilJUJl auu II C UV1>V v means an early peace. We are still st )ng in our conviction that this war will end this year. And that peace will come through the United Ctotoc! qti/1 Procident Wilson. And on VVUVWO ?A*4 V*. A VW-V--4.V the grounds and conditions laid down in his speech of Monday to the conv gress. He is the man of destiny through whom peace is to come to the world. We hope that the peace ft may come soon, and on the lines Tatft | down by President Wilson, and W31 "believe that it will. A friend of The Herald and News told us the other day that we had sent him two papers folded together of the same issue, he supposed in an effort to make up for the one or two issues printed with only four pages, "but that it would not work. Well, that was not our purpose. We are going to make up in the extra good paper that we intend to print from now henceforth. And then he facetiously remarked that if we had not taken up so much <napp tell in o- about our troubles we - ? could have printed a better paper. Maybe so. Yon know, we believe in taking the familyinto your confidence, and dealing frankly with all the members. and we can't help it. But he comforted us by adding that he knew The Herald and News would get there just the same, and he was sticking to the old ship. There has never been anv doubht about that. The Herald .and News has been here too long. It is like T*mnvson*s Brook. 'Men may come and men may go bu* it goes, on forever. i ne present editor ha? been with it longer than any other one person. In fact, for more than half of its existence. Thirty, one years the 7th of the coming March since we became at least a part owner, and for some time before we had worked for the paper. Rut the first thing you know we will be talking shop again. There are names on the mailing li^t tnat were there when we came, and we hope they may remain for many years yet. A good time to drag the roads after the recent showers. We are gla^ to hear that the dragging is going on all over the cotmty. Ti-i? wonderful / i low many friends the old drag ha.; io\v. We are proud of it. There was i time when he was sort of an orphan and nobody seemed to care for lim. but we are proud that we always stood by him faithfully and. that now he lias so many friends, and we hope there will be plenty to keep him busy serving, for the great life is the life of service. Even Ed DeCamp in his Gaffnev Ledger is ad vising the people to drag the roads. A REMARKABLE WO MAS. The death of Mrs. Carrie Gary at Abbeville last week removes from the scenes of this world a remarkable woman. She was the daughter of Dr. Blackburn and her mothewas a Gary, a sister of Dr. Frank Gary's father. She was a half sister oi tne late jvirs. Mci^aii or tnis town, the mother of Mr. John M.
