The ; y best food product we have. And the \ x r i. ? i TM i. T 2 ? 1~. 1 must pronicUMe oxow. nam insu > ^ V j?tatoes. It the cold weather has not killed ? the wheat crop it will result in ? eood in that it will kill the bugs and ^ serais that would probably destroy ?j the crop next spring and maybe iC will do a great deal toward retrdlag the progress of the boll weevil. The legislature will very probably remain in session *he full forty days. Two weeks of the session are now about gone and nothing has been done t of consequence and in fact it takes j about that time to get down to real : work. If the oats should he killed ly the recent freeze the thing to do is to plant mo. e c..t=; cr i lart t' e land to corn and the san^e is true ps to wheat. Tiiere is scar< e'y any danger of ing to much food during the next year. At times likes these it is the man \ who sticks that is a; predated. It is ! not difficult to he a friend "vvh.n everything goes dead wronetaointacine: i thing goes on smoothly b: t t- e testing time comes when everything goes dead wron?r. That is the time that tells ths tole. ; j ar? times above all others when there should be hearty cooperation of all our people. We need to get together and., to remain tog-ether and J to work for the general welfare. Thei; man who will take advantage of his:' i neighbor in these times is an enemy !; to his country even if he has the. j opportunity. Xo kick coming for e^cting Edward , Mclver to a judgship. He is a good ; lawyer and a mighty fine man the; son of a distinguished citizen and a: judge of great ability, and high, character. In the election of judges the lezisla- j ture retained practically all of the j present judges and in this the action j! is to be commended. I Since our trouble about getting <; ! _ linotvpe operator we have given j ? preference to local matter. We take ! it that our readevs would prefer to j have a record of what is going or. in i \ 11 fcheir own community rather than ! j long articles about the war or other J matters in which they are not in-1 terested and which they get from the j daily papers. Fact is we do not ger ; j much news about the war thatMsi, reliable any way. . We feel that we should make the}' statement that we are aware of the j fact that many errors of spelling and I of grammar now appear in these; columns. When you recall that the j young man who is now setting what i tpye we are using has only been at the j keyboard for about a month and thai! when he took the machine was in bad \ repair and we have not yet had an , opportunity to have a machinist to | overhaul it you will agree with us that j we are doing1 pretty well. We could j use plate and print eight pages as j usual but somehow we hate to fill j up with plate though some of itmay | be better than we would select. Too ; have the matter set outside of town : is too expensive not to speak of the great inconvenience. So we have de- j citled to print occasion^/ ana unui we can do better a four page >paper | and to handle local stuff mainly. We regret that we can not do more of the 1 legislature stuff but we can do only j what we can and hope that our rea^ "*s will realize the situation and bare with us until we can do better. For the last two issuer of The Herald and News there has appeared oil the first pag'e of this paper a statement. of the Commercial Rank of Newberry showing the conditions of said bank as of close of business on Decebmer 31. the same day that tne call was made for a statement of the Nationals banks. This statement showed that the bank ha dreached and <i>assed over the million dollar marK A later statement shows that the deposits of the bank have gone beyond the million dollar mark. That is gom? some. In fact it is the first bank in this county to go beyond the million dollar mark in its statement. And look at the loans and discounts and the surnlus if you want to see how the bank is growing and how it stands. The sto^k is worth over two to one. The deposits over a million dollars and the loans and discount? nearly to the million dollar mark, it is a fine showing: for a fifty thousand dr?ilar "hsriif in a small community like Newberry and speaks well for the management.
