I Brownsvule, Texas, July 30.?Several shots were exchanged last night between outposts and guards at the ! camp of the First Illinois cavalry ani ! supposed Mexican bandits who ap- i parently were attempting to raid I Pickett lines of cavalry horses. So j far as is known there were no casual- ! ties on either side. The shooting j took place two and one-half miles! north, of Brownsville. Two patrols sent out to investigate declared they saw a man leading four horses. Challenged by the guards, they asserted, 'he answered with two volleys from a shotgun and disappeared in the underbrush as the guards returned the shots. Two or three other prowlers were then seen and as the guard advanced in skirmish line they fled abandoning the horses. Anotner patrol was sent out to cut off the escape of the supposed bandits from the river and they also were fired on.
