The burning came immediately after the negro's trial had ended and the jury had returned a verdict of guilty, giving him the death penalty. Some one not far from the negro started the cry of "Get the negro."' It was taken up by all those from the part of the county where the negro's victim was killed and Washington was then seized and removed from th'e court room. After the verdict had been returned, Washington said in half audible j whisper: "I'm sorry I done it." The rush to get the negro was so j sudden that officers, lawyers, and i newspaper men were swept off their feet and the victim was in the hands of the mob before any one could stop the proceedings. While the crowd that took Washington from the court room is said to have been composed of people from j the country it was joined (by many citizens of Waco, and in some instances they left their places of business to view the burning of the negro. Later in the day members od the mob returned to the scene of the burning, placed the charred body in a sack and dragged it through the streets behind an automobile to Robinson, where the victim was 'killed. What remained of it was suspended J from a telephone pole there.
