Ipje JeraiD anil je?s. Entered at the Postcffice at New^arry, S. C., as 2nd class matter. E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Tuesday, November 9, 191 The road question is the big one before the people of this country today, but they seem not to realize it. Any old road seems good enough to the average citizen. That we need better roads no one will question, and that Kotrov marie will nnv \VP do nOC be lieve any sane man will qr.rstion, but when you try to come down to hard tacks and tell the people that it takes money to build and maintain good roads they are not so willing to furnish "the cash. Hhe great trouble is really not the building of the roads, but the maintenance of them after they are built. There is very little use to build good roads and make no provision to maintain them. Take the road from 'Newberry to Whitmire, while it is not the kind of road we would like to see. yet it is a good road as roads go in tnis county, dui the question now confronting the people is the maintenance of this road, and if it is not given attention it would have been better to have done nothing v to it. i?V'e believe the people along this road are going to see to it that it j is maintained. We hope so. i ! ] If some provision could be made toj I have the split log drag used at thej right time on our roads there would be little complaint about the condition of many of the roads that are now in bad condition. It is so inexpensive ii coes seem that some provision could be made to use it on more of the roads I of the country. Our local reporter seems to have a spite again-st the condition of Friend street from the depot to the postoffice. "WTa. An. n r\t Irnrvw rrmpVi ahnilt it but ?? C UV UVl ikWV IT AAAMVM MW y we let it go, for it is a pretty safe! guess that most any of our streets would give you a shake-up if/you undertook to travel over them very fast. All we know of Friend street is from Caldwell to our office door and that portion is very good. We do know that I a portion of Main street from the erd j of the brick paving going east is about as bad as any road we would care to I travel. We suppose the city council is doing all it can with the means at hand to make good streets. The city is putting up some permanent bridges which is in the right direction for the (expenditure of the public funds. It is almost criminal to spend the public money on patch work. The employe who is a clock watcher j and who dees not feel that he should, ever give a moment of his time that i is not paid for may never hope to be f anything hut an employe and he is1 really not fit for that job. w Now is the time to send in your subscription to The Herald and News. It. / can be had now for the pitiful sum of frvr 19 mnnrhc Or von rail set four good magazines and The Herald and News for a whole year for $1.49. Or we will give you The Herald and News for a year at^ the Progressive Farmer, the best agricultural paper published inthe South, and the Housewife, a good family paper, all for the small sum of 51.9S. Could you ask or expect anything cheaper? Now is your opportunity. (Then we are publishing the b(St paper we can, and that is some paper. If you are the least skepn o rri n TIT n TV ill uvai auu ociiu in yyjui. ^ send you a few sample copies free. And we feel that is cheap enough for i any ore. ! Mia wy: love yoit. But, you "know, ?t :akes a little of that old stufr we ca:i someumes iuiny mere, 10 buy the necessaries for the household. And tc buy paper and pay the printers and keep the necessaries in our own pantry, r.ot to speak of the interest on the bank notes, it takes a liule money. Some time ago when we were selling the paper for a whole year for the i i pitiful sum of $1.19 we not only made I the statement in the paper, but we sent each one of our out of county -sub! scribi-rs a statement telling him how i his subscription 'Stood, and that he I 1-1 c ...T 1 ? Xot many ! cf them took advantage of this very i liberal offer. The point of this paragraph is to say that we are going to begin the cash j in advance system again, and we are j going to start with our out of the "> county subscribers. That may sound 'strange, b?t those of our household -a ao have left the county should be willing to send the small amount that is due if they want the paper, and if iiiz\ uun l >> e mi e guiag. tw tui off on the first of January. We are _roing to give you that long. We love you and will hate to part with you. i but love to be lasting must be recipro! cal, and your part is to send us the I amount you owe us and the renewal. Now, dear friends, come along and 'io your part and do it right now. We need it and we are due it. If you love r.s show your love by the little check that will pay your subscription for 9 mother year, with the amount you owe t/v?? t V? IW 'r\ An n nf o i.ui cue past ^cai, ???c ^aii nut clulviu to accumulate a big amount on back subscriptions again, for our experience is that it is worthless. We do not care for money, but we do love to pay what we owe, and we could do it easily if those who owe us would come along and like little men pay what is due. You get a whole year now if yoa pay $1.31 by the 20th of November. After that date it is notour intention to charge every one the old price, which is cheap enough, $1.50. We want to give you an inducement to pay what is due. We ha>ve carried many of our 'subscribers during the summer when money was scarce and times were hard, and we were hard up, too, but we managed to carry you, and we now ask you to come along and show your appreciation by paying the amount that is due.
