For this purpose, the United States j .government, by an act of congress, j ihas appropriated fifty-five thousand dollars. While t)':is amount was a small item, it carried with it the national endorsement to hold this exposition. As a further evidence of this fact, President Wilson and his cabinet will visit the exposition eiti-er on the open- ing or some other day. Large exhibits will be sent to Richmond from nearly every industrial school in the country. The colored "? - people, as a uniii are preparing a. tuilection of specimens of our progress in fifty years. The nation expects to see at this exposition t|e best evidences of thrift and progress of the negro, and should this event fall short of toe expectations 01 me guvaumcut and other spectators, it would do more to retard ti':e race than could be overcome in a generation. The white people are much interested in tlie success of this exposition and are working to make the exposition an event for wfcich the nation will be proud. Tens of thousands of them will -visit the .ovnncitinn to rnmmend or condemn the strides of the negro in the last fifty ! years. The philanthropists, who in the past have contributed t::eir millions, will be there, and should the negro make a poor showing, it would, in? many in stances, discourage mose wno are contributing to the uplift of tne race. It is hoped, therefore, that every member of the race will do something toward making this the desired success. They should take personal interest in this exposition, not only in sending splendid exhibits of every kind worthy of demonstration, including agriculture, but t':ey should visit the expositho tpric nf thousands. Thev UVU KfJ vv**w V* should come from every section of the country. This is not for any individual or body of individuals, but for the benefit of-the entire race. It is a race institution. It must be a success; for a failure will retard the race.
