D. Lee, is chairI man. Mr. Appelt was born in Troy, X. Y., j March 22, 1857, and in early life came ! with his parents to South Carolina, i He was educated in the public schools j of New York city and at the Greeni port high school, Greenport, L. I. He j entered politics shortly after attaini "hie mair>r?tv Hp was ten years J ? probate judge of Clarendon county, j was for some time treasurer of the I town of '.Manning and was postmaster j there during ti:e 19 years preceding j August, 1913. As a boy ;be joined the ! staff of the Manning Times, the Rev. j S. A. Nettles being proprietor. This ! journal he had owned and edited for j about 30 years. Mr. Appelt took much i interest in the militia ana servea as a ; major on the staff of Gen. Joseph L. | Stopplebein.
