'Workman was appointf ed as one cf the tellers at the joint session of the legislature on Thursday xc canvass the returns of the lasgeneral election. Mr. Workman is also a member cf the house committee on railroads. t-pt-p is rin clause in the State con stitution providing that J. Fred Schumpert, of Newberry shall be elected sergeant-at-arms of the State senate every two years, but the custom has grown up and it seems to be as effective as if it were in the constitution. And it is agreed by everybody that Mr. Schumpert makes a good sergeant-at-arms.?Anderson Mail. Mr. G. A. Spinks came to Newberry last week from Rushr>ille, Ind., to see his brother, Mr. C. B. iSpinks, whom he had not seen in eight years, since he saw him in Missouri. '.Mr. G. A. Spinks hasn't been Sout'n before in 12 years. He has located in Laurens, to represent the Carolina Life Insurance company, the sam-? company Mr. C. B. Spinks renresents in NeVberry. Hon. X. W. Workman has also been placed as a member of the committee on the hospital for the insane. Miss Rosa yn Summer instructor, is proving a desirable addition to our curriculum ?Report from Mont Amoena seminary in Lutheran Church Visitor, 14th, whica continued to say that while Miss Gertrude Simpson, of the general synod's mission in Liberia, Africa was t'.:e guest of Miss Summer, she addressed the student body on the work among Africans. Her addresses werc heard with much interest. Missions geography, and 'social customs re ceived new interest from the students, Miss Simpson left 2 large number of new iriends and admirers among our girls. George S. Mower, of Xewberrf speaker pro tempore of the house, was given the coveted place as chairman of the judiciary committee. After the announcement of his appointment !?r. Mower asked, on account oi uis election as speaker pro tempore that he be excused from serving a* chairman and as a member o; this important committee. Mr. Mower while yielding his place had precedent in plenty for continuing to ac as chairman of the judiciary committee and speaker pro tempore.
