He Tells of the Diamonds and
Jewelry Stolen.
IMr. J. M. Mayer, who lives in Atlanta,
and wiho is a son o?f Mr. H. M.
Mayer, of New,berry, lias sent his fathi
er a copy of a letter written by a
member of Sherman's army in its
famous march to the sea and across
Georgia and the Carolinas. Young Mr.
Mayer ?ays he has seen the original j

The only reason for publishing sueu
a letter is to give the rising generations
some idea of the terribleness of
war and the horrors o:' it, and the i
rapine and plunder that follow in its
wake. Sherman said war is hell and
we guess he knew something of war ]
whether or not be had any acquaintance
with that other place or not.
The following is the copy of the
letter:
Dear Wife:: I have no time for
particulars. We have had a glorious
time in this- State; Universal license
to burn- and plunder, were the ordersjjof
the-day. - ; " ';

patches, silver pitchers, cups, spoons'
and fcrks, etc.. are as common in.camp,
as blackberries.
The valuables procured we estimate
hv companies': each comranv is re
quested to exhibit the result of its opr

and first choice falls' to the sharo
cf the commander in chief and staff,
one-fiifth to field officers of regiments

and tnree-lrtns to toe company, uificers
are not allowed to join these
expeditions without disguising themselves
as privates. One of our captian's
commander borrowed a suit in
this place. He got a large quantity
of silver, among other things an old

at this place. DeSassure is one
of the F. F. H. of South Carolina
and was made to fork over liberally
Officers over the ranl^ o. captain are
not made to put tneir piunaer in ine
estimate of distribution. This is very
unfair, and for this reason in order
to protect themselves, subordinate officers
and privates, keep every thing

little fact in connection with
this was that Mr. Hawkins married
both the bride's parents and grand
parents. The wedding march was
played by Miss Janette Bolt of Town
".ille, a young lady just 13 years old.
The bride wore a lovely tailored suit
of dark blue with hat and gloves to
match and carried a bouquet of narcissus
and ferns. Immediately after
the ceremony the guests were delightn
