Taking Medicine In the Dark.
Never take medicine in the dark.
This is the advice in an Interesting
little booklet 1 found in a drug store.
It is timely and wholesome and has
3 wide application. The people ot this
country are too fond of taking medicine
in the dark. They are so credulous
and so eager to make money that
they are constantly tbe victims of
tbeir own folly. A man has made a
large fortune during the past fifteen
years by writing letters from Spain
to persons in this country telling the
latter about fortunes left them by
strangers on certain conditions. These
conditions always involve the payment
of money before the fortune can be
secured. It is amazing how many persons
who ought to know better have
given up from $500 to $10,000 to an
absolute stranger in the belief that
with this amount the latter stood ready
to turn over $20,000 to $100,000 to his
rictims.?Lesl ie's.

A Maugnty personage.
Professors in Germany are important
personages and know it. but few
probably ever reach the pinnacle of
haughtiness attained by the one o3T
whom this anecdote Is narrated.
He was one of the greatest men in
Jie faculty at Heidelberg. One day th*
authorities of that city ordered that
the street in front of the'prof essor'a
bouse should be paved.
"If you ddn't stop that Hroise," remarked
the professor to the pavers. "I
shall give up my position as a member
of the Heidelberg faculty."
The pavers stopped work at once.
The municipal authorities sent arounu
to inquire respectfully of the professor
when they might pare ilie street
"When 1 tike my vacation." he replied.
Then and only theu was the street
paved.
