The Fortner bill to prevent white teachers in negro schools died in the senate. There were lively scenes in the house cn Wednesday night. Xo one was hurt.. The 2 cent rare bill with a number of other bills died in the senate on Wednesday night without ever having reached a vote. Wonder how many more are going to enter the race for lieutenant governor. It is a very nice job, and then the governor might die or be elected to the United States senate. There are possibilities in the job. The Herald and News today prints the county supply bill for Newberry county which includes appropriations made by the legislature. The senate struck out about $300,000 and after about three days in fres conference, the house practically agreed to all of the senate amendments, but even then the appropriation bill carries more than $2,000,000. Even with this the most constiuctir-o wnrt in tvb?r*h rho ^tafp has hppn engaged for the past several years will be discontinued, at least for a year, on account of the legislature failing to make an appropriation to carry it on. We refer to the development of the modern asylum at Stare Park for the proper care of the unfortunate wards of the State. About $250,000 has al ready been expended in this development and the equipment and organization for carrying on the work were in fine condition and it would have been economy for the Sta:e to have spent ab'Dut $100 000 a year on the work for two or three years and by that time practically all of the patients at the j asylum in Columbia could have been | at the new institu:ion in the country. | The people of the State would scarcej ly submit to any proposition looking j to the discontinuance of this development after it has proceeded as far as it has. I j was fortunate enough to be one of I the 30 who went from Oconee to the j Sunday School Convention at Anderson last week, and in some kind of a way I would like to tell somebody a little of what I saw and heard while j there. j To begin with, I presume there was j plenty of oiiier cities In South Car! olina that can and will do as much I for visitors, but I am sure they coma not do more. They did everything possible to be done for the entertainment and pleasure of the 600 delegates and several hundred visitors. Three cheevs for Anderson. We shall always love them. The meeting was held at the First Baptist church. They have an enrollment o"f 1,200 members?and no wonder! If they haven't a live wire for a pastor I never saw one. He re! minds one of a ray of sunshine im1 mediately after a storm. " I wish I had the words to tell something about everything that was said at this great meeting, but will have to leave that fcfr somebody else to do. A more cordial welcome was never gives than by Porter Whaley, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, in behalf of the city, and by Dr. .1. F. Vines, uastor of the First Baptist church, in behalf of the Ministerial Union. We realize then and there that we indeed were in a goodly place. Rev. W. I. Herbert, of Sumter, president of the Sunday Scliool Convention, filled the chair most ably. As he won't see these lines we would like to add that he is considered the handsomest man in the South Carolina (Methodist) Conference, and his goodness exceeds his looks, wl/Ich is far better. There were so many splindid lectures that each one we heard we f-hri7ip-'nt that nnp hest If therp is any other way known among men. other than was told there, as to howto reach children and how to teach them, I wonder what it is. One of the things most forcibly expressed was the saving of the child while young, such a small per cent of them ever being reached after the age of 21, and the best way outside of the home to reach them was through the Sunday school. So much was said about the great ! responsibility that rests on the Sunday school teacher.
