CHURCH DESTROYED. Edgefield Baptist Church Struck by Lightning, Catches Fire and is Burned to the Ground. Edgefield, June 27.?During a : thunder storm Wednesday afternoon about 2 o'clock, lightning struck th ; Baptist church in t'ne town of Edge-: --- 1 ^ -1- ^ T> field, causing u 10 caicu ait. nciuie the fact was discovered the fire had : made such progress that it was im-: possible to save the building. Some of the furnishings and the piano was ; saved. The church was built of brick and i was well furnished, being the most! costly and best furnish-ed church in > the place. The building and furni-! ture is estimated to be worth about 81.".000. while the new pipe * orgaL was valued at about $2,300, the in- i surance on the whole only amount- i ing to $3,200 or less than one third of the value of the whole. It is a great loss to th? Baptists of Edgefield and to the town; but, the Baptists are brave and the congregation is a large one, consisting of between three and four hundred members. While the loss is such a heavy one to t'hem, they will rise equal to the occasion and rebuild at once with a fm-er and larger edifice, is our prediction. June 29?Army officers, crowds of visitors and veter ans who are to participate in the ex-j ercises commemorating the 50th an* i j niversarv of the battle of Gettysburg I said today the event would go down in history as one of the greatest reunions of its kind ever witnessed. The officers said the magnitude of the undertaking would be difficult to grasp ev-n if the encampment were for the entertainment of 50,000 men in the j prime of life but when one considered that the average age of the veterans is 72 years, th-e task before those in charge of the camp must be released. It is expected to reach its height by tomorrow night and gallantly the little borough of 4,000 has j tackled the proposition of caring for its guests. To add to the difficulties and dangers of a situation hazardous under any circumstances, the weather is almost unbearable. With a sun blazing savagely the humidity is so high that the least move- j mint is productive of exhaustion. ; Thus far the veterans already here' have contented themselves very large- j ly with sitting about in shady places j talking. Already there have bsenj several cases of heat exhaustion. By the telephone system in the! camp, the construction of which in-j volved the stringing of 120 miles of! wire, it will be possible to telephone rrom any point in the camp to any part of the country reached by the ) telephone system.
