The annual convention of the lied Men of South Carolina came to a close today after a very pleasant session, in fact the delegates say that they vftnaiiraH th?> mnst rnrriifll trentment W"V Xiivs/W W v.. in Anderson that has been accorded to them anywhere. After the election of officers Tuesday afternoon some routine business was transacted after which the great council took a recess and enjoyed a troliey ride and a barbecue at Buena Vista. The night was cool but the members experienced no discomfort on account of the warming fellowship, etc. There were about oOO persons served at the tables and the occasion was iii every way a decided success. The tafbles were filled with plenty and some more. The exercises after the 'cue were presided over by Mr. A. H. Dagnall who kept the Red Men and the pale faces laughing at his running fire of comment. .Mr. Porter Whaley, secretary of the Anderson Chamber of Commerce, made his first public appearance in an impromptu speech which showed that lie- ise loyal to Anderson, now and for keeps. Past Great Sachem Jvong, of I'nion. made a very pleasant talk in which he referred to the pleasant treatment given in Anderson; Col. Russell, oi' Kentucky, made a very enjoyable short speech and was follow ed by Messrs. William Banks and T. F. Watkins of the pale faces, after which there were talks by Solicitor Albert E. Hill, of Spartanburg, and Dr. J. P. Carlisle, of Greenville. The last speaker was Gov. Blease, who made a very neat and appropriate and pretty speech, complimenting the Daughters of Pocahontas and the visitors from Kentucky and paying S glowing tribute to South Carolina. The great council concluded its deliberations Wednesday at noon and the keeper of the wampum tore off a few mileage clips for the 180 visitors and sent them regretfuiy on their way. The next meeting will be held in Rock Hill under the invitation of Mr. Max G. Bryant, one .of the most prominent secret order men in the State. The great council adopted the model hill for the protection of the orphans of deceased braves. It was decided to retain the standing committee and to place orphans in the care of suitable persons in'the jurisdiction of the lodge or tribe in which the parent held membership. Each such ward of! ihe great counc il is to receive <32.50 j per week for support. It is also made imperative that they attend the pubv lie schools for the full term and at leiiu cuurun anu ounud> b^nuui insularly. The selection of officers and great representatives was the most important matter before the council of Red Tuesday aiternoon. The election resulted as follows: E. H. Aull, of Newberry, great sachem; A. E. Hill, of Spartanburg, great senior sagamore, defeating A. M. Deal, of Columbia, who was in line of promotion, causing considerable surprise among the delegates; O. D. Gray, of Williamston, grea: junior sagamore; B. 0. Wallace, of Sumter, jchief of records; S. M. Clarkson, of Columbia, great keeper of wampum, and Otto Klettner, of Newberry; Jas. G. Long, of Union: J. P. Carlisle, of Greenville, as supreme representatives. C. E. Tolly, of Anderson, was hg.s been a supreme representative for several years, is a member of the important committee of great council of the United States which meets in Wasington next September and is therefore a member of The national council.
