Boyce, who had been .-erving sentence for cotton stealing, had been liberated on Saturday, the day before the killing. Waits, the dead negro, had been doing much talking about the matter. When the two met at Hannah church the difficulty occurred, with the result as above stated. Mr. Jno. R. Slider in City. Slider. The family left Newberry thirty-one years ago last August, and this is Mr. Slider's first visit since. He is representing J. H. Schroet:r & Bro., printing machinery and utilities, in Atlanta, Southern agents for Whit lock Printing Press Manufacturing company, etc. Mr. Slider is do- | ing well, as is also his brother, Charles i T., who is head of the Southern Ex-! press company in, Atlanta. Many of' Newberry's citizens recol -ct the two; little boys as they left the city, and' the visit of the former recalled the time when Mr. Thos. P. Slider was a moving spirit of the place and John and Charley, by their fun and brightness, added to the life of the community.' Their friends are glad that the boys fulfilled the promise of their youth in growing t* steady manhood and rising to responsible positions. Charley Slider nas not been back to Newberry, but Jno. R. give;- every indication of being an up-to-date man in his business. THE NEWS OF PROSPERITY. j I Sad Death of ? Young Lady?Christ-; mas Exercises lit the Various Churches. Prosperity, Dec. 23.?The news Sunday of Mhs Janie Russell's death brought sadness to her many friends, for she was one* of Prosperity's most popular young ladies. She had been at the Mossic sanitarium, at Hendersonville, X. C., for the past few; months'in search of health; and her friends were in hope that she would be. benefited, but it seemed that the Master needed this flower and plucked it in its young beauty to taks to himself; in heaven, where her sweet voice will i join the heavenly choir in singing praises. Her remains reached here Monday, and the following young men; acted as pallbearers: Messrs. W. .J., R. K. and McFall Wise, C. M. Simpson, Robert Counts and Vernon Wheeler. The funeral services were conducted by h^r pastor, Rev. Leslie, at the Prosperity cemetery. She is survived by her father, Mr. R. H. Russell, two sisters. Mis-es Lillie Mae and Ruby Russell, two little nieces, Misses Ellen and Florence Wheeler, and a number of other relatives and friends. The Moral offerings were lovely. Mr I P i Dick) Bowers was born , and died December 22, 1912. Karly in life he connected himself with the church, and through all these years has remained faithful to the covenant he made with God. He has been one of the 1* ading members of Zion church, and at the time of his death he was a steward. Mr. Bowers was o :e of the best known and beloved citizens of Newberry county. The funeral services were held at Zion Monday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. ; S. C. Morris. He leaves a wife, eight i children and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn his death.
