AULL, EDITOR. a ft J ?V/v,TnmKQ.r 5 1 Q"1 9 | rriuiij, .iu?ciuuvi \j, L ' = g The election of Wilson is the first t Southern Democrat to be elected to \ the prt?Mency since 1845. c U William Jennings Bryan couldn't | r ^ Tvin himself, but he helped Wilson win. Governor Wilson was the only canc didate for the presidency who carried ^ his own home State. c ? Ohio, the ho ne State of President r Taft, gave its electoral vote to Wilson t and Marshall. t -w- I New York, the home State of Teddy \ Roosevelt, gave its electoral vote to i ond Mn.rs.hall. j TT nov/xi a**u ***?*? ? j Even California, the home of the < candidate for vice-president, on the Bull Moose ticket, gave its electoral vote to Wilson and Marshall. Gov. Wilson has received the largest electoral vote of any candidate for ^ the presidency since the founding of the government. Chairman Hilles says but for Mr. ' Roosevelt's desertion of the party the Republicans "would have won. The trouble Is* both Roosevelt and Taft to gether did not get enough to win. Tms is Democratic year. Municipal politics is livening up a little. It will be warm before the campaign ends. We hope the rivalry will ? be friendly and that there will be no mud-slinging. It is always better if it ean be so No need for it to be otherwise. It did not take long to know the re- suit after the polls closed on Tues day. It was a regular landslide to * Democracy. The people are waking up and harking back to good old Democratic government. It is up to ths Democrats to make good. A good time after this rain to use the split log drag. Good roads' are an evidence of civilization. Let the people of Newberry county show to the world that they are civilized and | lpt the evidence be the good roads j which run through the county. Gov. Wilson has truthfully said that \ i, he cannot accomplish the reforms for which he stands single handed and alone. He must have the people behind him if he is able to do anything. Let us all hope that the people will uphold his hands in everything that is for the uplift of the people and for a better government. The regular nominee for sheriff in Greenville won by a good majority. We are glad that it is so. The time has not yet come when an independ' ent can win. When the primary oath becomes- not binding on those who take it, then the primary is at an end, and the negro will become a very import ant iacior m oui v| Already a number of people in the State are casting their eyes towards Federal positions under a Democratic administration. We notice that several names have already been suggested for district attorney and 110 doubt a number of Democrats \vill be applicants for the various presidential post office appointments in the State. Of course, it is several months until the Democratic administration is in *" -f V* A.Cl?i augurated, out we bupyu&c applicants think there is nothing like getting in on the ground floor. It is to be hoped that the result of the citizens meeting on Monday night means a real forward ^tep for the town of New be; ry. There is no doubr ot the triKh of the statement by Mr. niease thai Xewberry has not kept pace with the other towns' of the State in the same class, and it is not because we have not the same advan ages and the same or better countryide to back up the town, but rather ecause there has not been that unaniaity of sentiment and pull together pirit which must be characteristic of ny community which expects or hopes o keep pace with the march of progess in this age. What we need is to * J -11 AM A ri /I ;et together ana 10 puu Luguuci emu o lay aside all petty jealousies and vork so" le time for the general weal if the community. Will we do it? f not there is little use to amend the :harter or to talk so much. What ve need is action. Gov. Geo. W. P. Hunt, of Arizona, lontributes an article to the Hearst magazine, for September, 011 the new thp main idPa is ui aiinuiu^;, in uiuvi* ? ? hat they are endeavoring in Arizona o develop a new conscience in the reatment of criminal?, and that the )hysical punishment for crime should )e at least humane. An effort is being nade to reform the prisoner, rather :han simply to punish him. Governor Hunt says: "In Arizona we have reached 'the poiitf now where we are developing a new conscience in our treatment of the criminal. We are trying t*1 arrive at a general plan that will defV>^ nn'onnor s\f rinf'hinp- hilt thf L lOWAAV/i V*. ? 0 power to do harm and will surrounc him with influences that will make < better man of him."
