Wiley in his controversy over the enforcement of the pure ioou laws Sioou out prominently m a speech by (j-cverrior Woodrow Wilson at the Inter-State rair tor?a v He dre\V attention to what he conceived to be the ineffectuality of boards of experts established under the administration of President Roosevelt He used it as an illustration of his objections to a commission or board ' . of experts to handle either the tariff I or the trust problems, j ' Governor Wilson voiced for the first I time his objection to the tariff board idea, declaring it would mean "a post/ ponement cf tariff legislation." Tlie Pure Food Question. He turned early in his speech to the pure food question. N "Everybody how suspects," he said, "and tie suspicion is based upon a \j great-many facts that can be estab lished by proof that these pure food laws are not lived up to, that the inspection is not always what it ought to be, and that a great many things are permitted to be done which nullify the pure food laws. , "I suppose that most of you know that a great controversy arose because Dr. Wiley, who was ia charge of the pure food administration, objected to the use of benzcate of soda in certain things that were sold to you, particularly in cans for foods. Now a very nice thing occurred. The gentlemen who wanted to use benzoate of soda persuaded the president, Mr. Roosevelt, that this was a scientific question a.:d, therefore, ought to have a board cf chemists to {determine it. And Mr. Roosevelt picked out some of the most eminent and honest chemists in this country, headed by a personal friend of mine, the president of Johns Hopkins university, and submitted to them this question: Experts' Answers Are Limited. / " 'Is benzoate of soda hurtful to the Human stomach or to the- human digestion wh'^n taken internally?' Observe that that was the only question submitted to them and that was ex* actly the people who wanted to use fcenzoate of soda for wrong purposes, wanted to limit the inquiry to. These gentlemen had to say that benzoate of soda in itself was not harmful to 'the human system as I believe it is not. But they were not asked' this question: 'Can benzoate of soda be used to conceal purification? Can it be used in thiags that have gone bad to conceal the fact that they have gone bad and to induce people to put them in their stomachs after they have gone bad?" iucj wcic uut aJsivcu iuai qucsnuii, because if they had been they would have said: 'Yes.' Beware of Experts. "I want- to warn the people of this country to beware of commissions ofj experts. I have lived with experts all of my life and I know that experts don't see an> thing except wnat is under their microscope, under their eye. They don't even perceive what is under their nose and, an expert feels in honor bound to confine himself to the particular question which you have asked him. "Suppose you wanted Jto settle the? liquor question by asking a body ofj experts whether alcohol was poison or not. Big Business and Trusts. Turnitg to trusts, the speaker distinguished between "big business" and trusts. George C. Morrison Commits Suicide. ** 5? CaaioI on/) rruillilieill ill rvuuiai, cutmi auu Business Life. Baltimore, Sept. 17.?George C. Morrison, aged 40, president of the Chicago Title Guarantee and Trust eompany, of this city, committed suicide some time during last nfght in one of the private rooms at the Baltimore Athletic elub. The report to the police says that Mr. Morrison ended his life with gas, which he inhaled through a tube. Mr. Morrison occupied a conspicuous position in the business and political affairs of Baltimore, and also was prominently interested in horse racing. Blames Newspapers. He left a note explaining the deed. The coroner took possession of it, and while refusing to make all of it public at. this time, he said the dead man re ferred to the onslaughts of a yellow , newspaper in connection with his interests in the race track at Havre de Grace, as one reason for his action. The suicide of Mr. Morrison came within a few days of accusations made by Governor Goldsborough, that Mr. Morrison and other leaders of the business and social life of Harford county |iad made nrsrepresentaiion concerning the Karforj county racing .
