LORIMER UNSEATED B\ ! UNITED STATES SENATE OUSTED 151 VOTE OF ALMOST TWO TO ONE. Accused Senator Completes Defense of Keeord, and Th^n the Fateful Balloting Begins. Washington, July 13.?By a vote of 55 to 28 the United States senate today unseated William Lorimer, junior senator from Illinois, and declared hib title to his seat invalid. The end of the long fight to ous: the senator came after six days of protracted debate in which Senator Lori? VioH r?r>r>uniftd the flOOf for U1C1 uuu ? x three sessions, making an impassioned defense of ftis election. The final vote was upon the resolution offered by Luke Lea, senator from Tennessee, declaring the Lorimer election by the Illinois legislature in 1909 invalid. The adoption of the Lea resolution carried with it the senate's verdict that "corrupt methods and practices were employed in the election of William Lorimer, making his election invalid." Dramatic Moments The closing moments of the trial were intensely dramatic. Lorimer, holding the floor, making a last defense of his seat, declared" he did not appeal for the votes of any senator, fAr infitlPD V uv iwa^u AVi j uw vivvi Senator Lorimer, when the vote "was announced, walked slowly toward the back room and passed into a cloak room, Senator Smoot throwing an arm over his shoulder. The vote ousting him was concluded at 2.05 o'clock. The man who had occupied a seat in the senate since June 18, lb09, by the vote today passes out of the records and never - in 11? .U/si J ? eonr?! The Lea resolution, adopted by a ote of almost 2 to 1, was as follows: "Resolved that corrupt methods and practices were employed in the election of William Lorimer to the senate of the United States from the State of Illinois and that his election was hopofnro invaliH " Tillman for Lorlmer. The taking of the vote was preceded t by a pathetic incident. Senator Till man, taking the floor just before the calling of the roll began, asked permission for the clerk to read a statement he had prepared which he himaelf was too weak to read. It stated las conviction that Senator Lorinier j liad been elected without fraud. "I realize now that I have but a little time before I must meet my Maker," said Senator Tillman's statement. "I cast my vote today, secure in the conviction that the senator from Illinois is entitled to his seat. If he is driven from it I hope he will go toack to Illinois and devote himself to that work for which he has proven iini6elf so eloquently able, the uplifting and betterment of his fellowmen." Senator Tillman wept as his tribute to Senator Lorimer was being read, -while other members of- the senate iound it difficult to hide their feelings at his references to his own failing condition. Senator Smith, of South Carolina, Toted to oust Lorimer. Another Case. As Lorimer walked out of tne senate door into the Republican cloak room, the chief clerk of the house, Jerry South, announced to the senate the impeachment of Robert W. Arch bald, judge of the commerce court. 1185 1912 ~ COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 128tli Year Begins September 27. ifc offers courses in Ancient and Modern Languages, Mathematics, HisTi^liU/io!
