COTTON RED SPIDER. <^! <?> [ 3> Clemson Extension Work.?Ar- <? <S> tide 81. j <s> <$> j Even now in some fields the red spider is beginning to do its damage, ^ and this will become more evident as our warmer and drier summer weath-j fim^r er -comes on. This damage can be recognized by the reddish discoloration nf the leaf of the. Dlant infested, be * 4 ginning at the base of the leaf where the stem is attached and spreading out over the entire leaf. Different from the damage done by what is known as "cotton rust," the leaves affected by the red spider shrivel andd rop off. The so-called red spider is not a spider at all, but a little red mite, which , cuts into the leaf and sucks the sap out of the plant. Infestation will be observed to begin * -usually near the edge of the field. This is due to the fact that the spiders pass through the winter on green vegetation, such as we commonly find ' ? ? J? C.1J- ~ _ J _ 1 about tne eag"es 01 acms <tuu <iiong ditch banks. When the cotton has become well started, they wander on to this and begin, to spread. They lay numbers of reddish colored eggs on. * the under surface of the leaf, and spin over these a fine web to hold themtr? tVip lpaf whilp at work and i ^ ^ to protect their young. Various agencies, such as the plow going through the field, a stray dog, or the -wind, distribute the pests for a distance often of many yards. From these facts it can be clearly seen that a good remedy for the red spider is a preventive one?to keep down by fall turning of the land the green weeds common about the edges ?. of the field. The next precaution to observe is not to let the pest get the start. Spray the infested area with a one per cent, lime sulphur solution. Make up the same kind of solution you -C - Ai i . used for a winter spray ior me sc-aie on your peach and apple trees and dilute this about twelve times. If you do not recall how to make this soluktion, full information will be furnished nnnn rwinestion by the division of pjlr; ^ -a Bg entomology, Clemson College. S. C. If Wf' ? you have the commercial lime-sulphur solution, dilute 99 parts of water to 1 of the solution. If these steps are taken as soon as the form begins ' to spread, it is a comparatively easy I matter to control the pest; but if de- ! laved it is almost an impractical mat- j ter for a farmer in his early* season to treat a whole acre even with a good j barrel spray pump. The red spider will be noted as of much more dan-: age during dry weather than when we have plenty of rain; and often, though ; not always, a good, heavy shower is fbetter than any remedial measure man j r;can apply. Wilson P. Gee, Assistant Professor of Entomology, j ? Tlie Crime of Striking a Postman. ] Atlanta Georgian. Ynhnriv in his risrht senses attacVs a ! policeman, because he carries a club j and the punishment would be immediate and severe. Nobody is likely to attack a fireman', because the public has very little relations with the uniformed fire department except in time of need, when we are glad to see them about. But v^rybody has more or less relations with the letter-carrier. Evorv Vinnco in \'pw York- visited bv the postman whenever there is a letter to bi delivered, and there are more or less constant personal relations with the postman when a special delivery letter or registered package has to be delivered and signed for. But now and then disputes will arise, and that is the time when it is well to remember that the private citizen had better keep his temper and under 110 circumstances lav his hands upon a . letter-carrier. You may squabble with the butcher's boy or the iceman or the milkman and take your chances of not hearing anything further from the rumpus, but if you lay a finger upon the letter-carrier you will certainly regret it, if you live. The reason for this is that the entire power and resources of the Unit ed States government stand constantly behind the letter-carrier. If necessary, the United States army will be called out to defend a letter-carrier. All this comes about because the mail is regarded as a more or less sacred matter.
